I have to repeat what others have said, excellent review!!! I was looking for a review on these devices, but yours was the only one that was complete. The review was in the context of tying all of these devices together while at the same time discussing them individually! Thanks!
I ws thinking of making airport express my primary wifi router. U kept repeating that it's only designed to be a substitute for travel etc but not to be a primary wifi router. In my family we have one MacBook pro, one Sony vaio, 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. Do u think an airport express can handle all of them at once? And how's the range of the wifi signal? I wd really appreciate an answer. Great review BTW.
@amitnagpal1985 The Express will allow all of those devices to connect. But range will likely be an issue. Quite frankly, I would not cheap out on the Express UNLESS all devices are on the same floor of no more than 1,000 sq ft. Otherwise, I would go for the Extreme if I were you.
Great review and explanation. I use the headphone jack of the express to connect (using a stereo Y adapter) to the audio input of my home stereo systems. I have one airport express connected to my living room system and another connected to my family room system and outdoor speakers. With this setup I can wirelessly stream my itunes content (including itunes radio) throughout my home and backyard from my macbook pro or ipad2. From my mobile phone I can adjust volume, what speakers are on, etc.
@JCD20071981 I can see how it might be confusing. But I never said that the Express can have a USB drive. I said it can share the contents of a drive or network share - meaning a networked storage location - to connected devices.
Basically, my problem is I have a weak wireless signal. I have a D-Link Rouder, in my basement (which is probably the source of its low signal) I want to get a Time Capsule but will I have to be putting it in the basement (that's where all the wires are). (The only stuff I have upstairs are ethernet cables.)
I have the airport express and so far I have set it in order to have a "wireless printer", however I want to expand my wifi signal. I have a wireless router (EchoLife520c) and so, when i wanted to use my AE, it sent a message that it could not be use in Bridge mode.
So i was wondering if i get a AExtreme, maybe i can "upgrade" my wireless network and extend it with the AExpress.
My question is: still my Echolife modem should be connected to my AExtreme right? Thanks!
@MichelinT30 All powerline needs is an Ethernet source. If your gateway allows you to plug in an Ethernet device, that's all you need. It doesn't care what the connection type is.
@mistermarcusgmail i need something that can reach my xbox. my gateway is on the living room and the xbox on my room and there are 3 walls blocking the signal any thing i can buy that can be antennas or routers
@MichelinT30 Best suggestion for wireless only would be Airport Extreme in the living room with an Airport Express in bridge mode in the room where the Xbox is. I'm assuming your Xbox is wireless which honestly isn't the best connection. IT really should be hardline due to latency and ping times.
@MichelinT30 Doesn't work that way. Too many variables, it's not that cut-and-dry. Walls, floors, etc. all play factors.
If your place is less than 1,000 sq feet and you don't have too many such barriers in place the Airport Extreme will be fine if run in the 2.4GHz spectrum. Otherwise you'd have to get an Airport Express or two to extend the signal out.
@mistermarcusgmail I have a wireless G gateway if I buy airport extreme will the speed be faster than the 4.92mbps i get and also will the signal be greater?
@MichelinT30 Wireless G, or 802.11G, is slower than 802.11N, or Wireless N, which is what the Airports use. However, Wireless G has a greater signal range in general.
Airport Extreme has better signal isolation from noise interference when using a Mac.
So you'll need to decide what is more important - range, or signal strength. If range matters keep Wireless G. If signal strength matters and you won't be that far from the signal source, the Airport Extreme will probably be superior.
@NoisinO If you're asking whether these devices can receive and parse existing wireless signal the answer is no. For that you'd need Windows 7 - which supports such bridging - or a MacBook Pro, where you can share inbound wireless via the Ethernet port. In effect, creating a gateway.
Excellent detailed video. I am ready to buy an Airport Extreme and your video just helped me decide. Can't wait and I appreciate the info on the other devices. I like how you broke everything down and informed me about the advantages and disadvantages. Thanks, best of luck with all your future reviews and channel.
I also use an Airport Express just for those occasions when i'm having aoutside party & i want to stream music to where everyone is (very portable - one plug & i'm done) ... Using a standard head phone jack into speakers keeps people away from my iphone (like to see at some parties, where people will fiddle around) ... X
Wow, I was not sure of to get the Airport Extreme or the Time Capsule, you explained exactly what i needed to know to make my decision. very clear and simple. thank you. Im a subscriber of your channel now. keep the good work. Thanks
@MRJUDGEsays Been working on that, but it's not easy. Problem is part of it is hardware, part of it is software, so it's not easy to translate to a video. But I've been working on it.
Yes but ssd's don't fail as often

can i use time capsule to create personal wifi network?
LetsSpotIt 3 months ago
@LetsSpotIt Of course. As noted in the video, it's the same thing as an Extreme, just has a hard drive. So yes, it can be a router by itself

can you use a Airport Extreme as a Time Capsule with an external drive?
goolest108 6 months ago
@goolest108 Use as a Time Capsule - no. But you can access it as a network share.
mistermarcusgmail 6 months ago
You make "us" believe you can connect a drive to the usb port of the express. But its solely used for connecting a printer.

MichelinT30 8 months ago
@MichelinT30 YouTube It. Can't post a link in the comments box. Just do a YouTube search for Powerline Ethernet. You'll see a bunch of choices.
mistermarcusgmail 8 months ago
@MichelinT30 Basically you are using your home's electrical wiring to send the Ethernet signal across.
