How stoned were Jon Anderson and Tony Kaye in this? WOW!!! It still sounds great though, this was back when Chris Squire could actually sing. Today, there should not be a mic anywhere near Chris. =)
This is an awesome early clip. I love their early line-up, they were so solid as band at this time and then they pick up Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman...And they become even more solid. Amazing!!!!
Thanks for posting this, 1970, I was 10 and Led Zeppelin and Yes were some of my favorite bands back then and still are today and I have my cousin to thank for that who let me listen to his record collection when I would visit...And yes that was Sargent Schultz in the audience...But "I know nothing"!!!
Awesome video of Yes. Love the song Beyond and Before. Full of energy. Was that Sargent Schulz I spotted in the audience just before the song started lol?
i would LOVE to see some footage, well-shot, of them with their big stage, with the articulated nebulae and lasers...fog machines and strobes, of the Relayer or Tales era.
Certainly some imaginative camera angles and bizarre shot choices. You'd never see a band filmed this way on television these days. And those French babes hosting the show (especially the brunette) OOH LA LA!!!
Jesus, Robert Fripp was right: Jon really needed to learn how to play a tambourine in time.I kid,I kid. This is marvelous footage, and Bruford's "No" T shirt is pure class.
@tie32101 That would be one of the L-100 series Hammond spinets (L-100, L-101, L-102, etc.). The different models differed only by the style of the cabinetry, the internals were all the same between them. Essentially, it's a scaled-down Hammond B-3. Two 44-note keyboards instead of two 61-note keyboards, only one set of drawbars per keyboard instead of two, fewer presets, etc. If slaved to a Leslie speaker, though, it is capable of doing nearly everything that a B-3 is capable of.

I have never seen Peter Banks perform before. The guy could MOVE! So did Kaye. The whole group puts on a good show here, and what's more the sound is decent. I'm so glad this Yes era is preserved. You can see how they were beginning to find their way to the awesome architects of prog they would become.
I have to agree that Howe is arguably much better than Banks. That said, Banks is no slouch. Any guitarists out there, try to play the opening few lines of "Small Beginnings" by FLASH (Banks band after YES) There's some pretty difficult stuff on that album.
OK, I love Yes, and it is a great song! There has never been anything like this band. However Peter is lucky he was ever in this band, he is one of those guitar player that stop learning after he figured out bar cords and the wah peddle! No offense , but he couldn't hold Steve pick let alone play in the same vain. Have you ever heard Peter play Steve? Let be real about this.
I wouldn't go that far, Pete Banks may not have been quite the virtuoso that Steve Howe was, but he still added nicely to everything early Yes did. I have the Yes BBC Sessions, and his playing is pretty amazing.
@chazisflying--You're right, Peter is no Steve. But to be fair, they were rehearsing what would eventually become "Roundabout" with him, long before Steve was involved. Peter claims he wrote the riff, though he is uncredited.
I always felt that after Steve joined. I thought WOW how did hey find a upgraded version of Banks? I git into YES in 72 at 15 with Howe. A perfect time and age but I wish I'd seen them like this!
On this last tour the band has been playing Astral Traveller, and the tour before that Every Little Thing and Sweet Dreams. In all three cases, Steve sounded absolutely natural, as if he wrote the part himself. I think that just shows that Peter Banks and Steve played in the same vein. Personally I liked Peter's work a lot, they just didn't showcase it enough on the albums.
Chris' Rickenbacker seems to have it's body and headstock covered with some reflective metalic stuff, and a strange semi-capo looking device at the headstock as well. Odd.
thanks for putting this on, it brings back memories of seeing them in the 68 to 70 period. as for television and chronology, Ive got another memory of them doing " somethings coming " on not only but also the peter cook and dudley moore comedy show at 8 30 on friday evening, but this has probably been erased by now
Then it is possible that this is a Canadian broadcast? Hard to believe they would have travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to perform a television broadcast at this early stage of their band. Although anything is possible.
Perhaps the logo in question is the logo of a television station that re-broadcasted this?
"Canal Jimmy" is absolutely a French Channel (via the satelite), it used to specialize in the broadcast of old, sometimes unsung gigs or shows.
I don't think the show takes place in Canada beacause I can't imagine tiny french bands like "les charlots" or "Martin Circus", or even Françoise Hardy flying off to Canada for a one-shot televised show!
My guessing is that the place is Paris (I think Zeppelin played there too at the start of their career)
In Switzerland we are about 35% French speakers and it's one for 4 (!) official languages. That's why Swiss and French speaking is not a contradiction. A part from the girls definitely have a Canadian accent (Quebec region) and Swiss TV or whoever may have been broadcasting this. But to find the source watch out in Canada... Also, the TV station Logo in upper right corner is not something I know from either French or Swiss TV from the last 45 years :-)
WOW. Youtube rules. How else would I ever see this amazing performance? So awesome to see them before the bombast. They're so skilled. I saw them in 76 with a stage designed by roger dean. It was one of the biggest productions I've seen to date. Squire, I think it is, looks like he has a buckethead mask on when he walks out. It's just the lighting but it's trippy.
Thank you for this, awesome, beautiful! This is my most favourite song on the album. The live performing´s lovely! Jon sings like an angel, as always.
How good was that? Intrigueing camera angles there. Other 60's performers must have looked at them and considered hanging up there own instruments in deference to Yes.
This is way cool! Love Bill's 'NO' shirt and Chris's hat... wow! Jon's fringe vest is great, too! They sound great, as always, even to this day! Thanks so much for sharing this!!
The guy on keyboards is Tony Kaye, the one on guitar is Peter Banks and the drummer is Bill Bruford. There also seems to be a wink to the popular Frère Jacques popular song starting 4:27 app., courtesy to the French hosts, I guess.
It isn't. IT's French TV as one someone pointed out awhile ago here. I just let it run with comments to get feedback until I make a change.I will be doing next. The guitarist is Peter Banks? Keyboards is Rick Wakeman?
Sounds pretty cool. Despite the technical limitations of this group Vs. the "classic" line-up, I love the aggression that the Bruford/Kaye/Squire rhythm section hit with. Nice!
@mrJimCharles indeed! the 'classic lineup' concept is pretty fuzzy anyway, which is part of what i was trying to get at. Shouldn't The Yes Album lineup be included? and i think everyone would like to forget Tormato, but that's the same group that made Tales... and Wakeman wasn't in for 'Relayer'. They sure had a lot of personnel changes. we're going to see Anderson/Wakeman in a few weeks; it's pretty exciting.
@chocolatelabfilms I think that the Fragile/Close to the edge lineup is considered by most to be THE classic lineup, Bruford being probably the best drummer they could possibly have of anybody ever, his style (and skill) being so appropriate for them.
@mrJimCharles i also prefer bruford by a wide margin, myself. while white was in it for so many decades, i do wish bruford had been in it a lot longer. with him and wakeman they had four people playing lead simultaneously most of the time... with anderson being the grounding force! upside-down from how most bands operated. with white things got a fair amount tamer.
I hate to bust your bubble, but this was filmed in January 1970 (not January 1969) meaning that Yes had been together for 18 months, not 6. This is the second oldest existing piece of Yes TV footage in existence (the other being 'No Opportunity Necessary' on Beat CLub, 1969). So much Yes footage from 68-70 has been lost (namely Magpie in the UK 1968 and a Swiss TV special form 1969). This is a rare, and excellent piece of early Yes footage.
Thanks for the info winter. I got this footage from a musician some years ago.I believed he traveled to UK back in the 80's. This was his best description of the Yes clip he had given me. I'm glad I posted this on youtube. Getting great feedback like your's is worth it. Thanks.
They weren't. And it's a shame, according to their website, BBC Television (TO THIS DAY) is still erasing stuff. They keep stuff now a minimal of 5 years now. If it's not worth keeping, they erase them (unless it's for historic reasons).
Last I saw Yes was at the Meadowlands Arena in NJ a fews back. We had floor seats right in front of the stage. Chris still sung high harmonies. I beleive this Yes tour was with Howe. Don't believe Rick was on this tour.
My copy is even clearer then this here on Youtube. I had to convert it from VOB to Avi or MPG to upload it here.I got this on DVD format from a undisclosed source.A musician is all I'm going to disclose. When I was in Germany in 78, they had high definition TV already! Euro studio cameras were far superior then anything stateside in the US.
Very nice footage, very clear image! Most of the other versions I've seen look like they come from an early VCR recording. By the way, the song is "Beyond and Before" - I think "East of Eden" was referring to another band performing on the show :-).
You are correct. I wasn't sure about the song. My first post I had a ? next to the song.East of Eden was another band that played after YES. I will check into that for a video clip form that same show.
I will make the correction about the song in my description. I have been a YES fan for many years. I was a kid back in the late 60's and 70's. I am a little embarressed I didn't get the song. It is a very catchy YES song.
This is f'in priceless....what a gift. Made my morning.....woohoo!!!!!!

Are you sure the video was filmed in Germany? The ladies at the introduction speak French, not German.
uwekoch 3 years ago
It isn't. IT's French TV as one someone pointed out awhile ago here. I just let it run with comments to get feedback until I make a change.I will be doing next. The guitarist is Peter Banks? Keyboards is Rick Wakeman?
Feedback is always welcome.

Sounds pretty cool. Despite the technical limitations of this group Vs. the "classic" line-up, I love the aggression that the Bruford/Kaye/Squire rhythm section hit with. Nice!
obsidiansands1 3 years ago
it's amazing to think that out of this group, only squire and anderson made it into the 'classic' lineup.
chocolatelabfilms 3 years ago
@chocolatelabfilms Bruford is in the "classic" lineup at first.
mrJimCharles 4 months ago
@mrJimCharles indeed! the 'classic lineup' concept is pretty fuzzy anyway, which is part of what i was trying to get at. Shouldn't The Yes Album lineup be included? and i think everyone would like to forget Tormato, but that's the same group that made Tales... and Wakeman wasn't in for 'Relayer'. They sure had a lot of personnel changes. we're going to see Anderson/Wakeman in a few weeks; it's pretty exciting.
chocolatelabfilms 4 months ago
@chocolatelabfilms I think that the Fragile/Close to the edge lineup is considered by most to be THE classic lineup, Bruford being probably the best drummer they could possibly have of anybody ever, his style (and skill) being so appropriate for them.
mrJimCharles 4 months ago
@mrJimCharles i also prefer bruford by a wide margin, myself. while white was in it for so many decades, i do wish bruford had been in it a lot longer. with him and wakeman they had four people playing lead simultaneously most of the time... with anderson being the grounding force! upside-down from how most bands operated. with white things got a fair amount tamer.

Thannk you SO much for posting this! Talk about "digging into the vaults! Thank you!!

Thanks.
No harm done.

I'm pleased you found that useful, glad to know all this information isn't completely useless!

Yep, one of richest broadcasters ever, BBC used to erase their pop shows to save videotape!!! Amazing. What were they thinking then???
the13er 3 years ago
They weren't. And it's a shame, according to their website, BBC Television (TO THIS DAY) is still erasing stuff. They keep stuff now a minimal of 5 years now. If it's not worth keeping, they erase them (unless it's for historic reasons).

Chris Squire often sang harmonies above Jon..."I've Seen All Good People" is another example, just off the top of my head.
KroMagnum60, thanks so much for posting this! Best quality I've seen on this video yet!!

Hey your welcome!

KroMagnum60 3 years ago
Is someone singing a harmony ABOVE Jon Anderson?!?

Look at Tony Kaye!
I've seldom seen him that animated!

Yes, very clear image compare to other uploads of this show, thanks!!!

Very nice footage, very clear image! Most of the other versions I've seen look like they come from an early VCR recording. By the way, the song is "Beyond and Before" - I think "East of Eden" was referring to another band performing on the show :-).
ctask633 4 years ago
Thanks for pointing the song out.
You are correct. I wasn't sure about the song. My first post I had a ? next to the song.East of Eden was another band that played after YES. I will check into that for a video clip form that same show.
KroMagnum60 4 years ago
I will make the correction about the song in my description. I have been a YES fan for many years. I was a kid back in the late 60's and 70's. I am a little embarressed I didn't get the song. It is a very catchy YES song.
Man they are young in this video!
