  • Wow. Nothing else to say. Amazing.

  • Did you find you had to put it on youtube because of what he said...?

  • Had to replay this part so much...Woooopie I'm On youtube...crack up!! Funny

  • Hey Don, I know you read these once in a while. You have kept the story behind this quite... please tell the real story about the song after your gone if not before! I play and sing this all the time and everyone asks what the real story behind this is... I have to tell them you have not reveled it yet.

  • Well.....Don could give his definition ANY time. The REAL meaning as you say...if thats what you want???....Whatever you are thinking as the verses go by IS THE REAL MEANING. The song laments the decline of the kind of music that insired imagination. The kind of imagination occuring as you try to figure what is being said. Thats why people can't figure this song out. Don't you get a "feeling" when you hear this song? THATS the meaning of the song. Thats its tghe "last" of its kind...

  • Pie was not written specifically in response to the plane crash.

    He's not 70--try 64

  • he makes me shiver

  • he wrote this song because of that crash that idrc23 said

  • @mrspoof96 no he didn't noone knows why he wrote this song!!!

  • @Pacer120 he wrote it because of the way Buddy Holly's death affected him when he died in a plane crash.

  • @Pacer120 you're an idiot.. EVERYONE knows why he wrote it... wow..

  • After he said "Whoopie! Im on Youtube!" you could see him point to the camera, so he knew he was gonna be on youtube.

  • I'm pretty sure this song is specifically related to the Buddy Holly plane crash.

  • yes thats what it was about the day the music died

  • when they murder the messenger we will know.america will leave before our very eyes.

  • why did he shout that at the end. how did he know he was gonna be on youtube did he see da camera?

  • Buddy Holly or not. I think this is the fucking worst performance Mclean had ever put up. Was he high on something or what?

Hey, I admire the guy, but how could he fuck up one of the best songs ever written or sung?

  • its just a different tune of the song asshole. you shouldnt judge shit when you dont know what the fuck your talking about.

  • The guy is like 70 years old, most people his age are retired and relaxing, cut him some slack. And he can't fuck up one of the best songs ever written or sung...because he IS the original writer and singer of the song...it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for him creating it in his youth.

  • bluepye- shut the fuck up twit!

  • you'd know from experience, right?

  • What did he screw up? or am I just reading this the wrong way?

  • Why'd youtube change so you can't see the whole reply thread

  • this song was for buddy holy

  • wrong, this song was for America! and its not about just buddy, its also about richie valen and the big bopper, when there plain crashed in 1959 in febuary.

  • its got some jfk, rolling stones, and 'nam in there too if im not mistaken.

  • Its also got some Lennon...

  • and just pure Americana as well

  • This song is about the Americian Foreign Policy !

  • no it isn't, its about music. The day the music died, the Beatles, Rolling Stones,Holly, Dylan, Valens, Joplin, the Big Bopper, and even references to the Byrds, Charles Manson's reaction to the Beatles, the only political references are to the troubles of the times, the Kennedy assasination and the reference to Lennon and Marx, but that was from a Beatles song, not foreign policy!

  • Whats great about the song is it can have different meanings to different people...

  • You're partially right and wrong, it's a song about America AND Buddy Holly's death (the day the music died? :P)

  • Explain: 'The day the music died' if your so smart! (sorry about losing my temper, if you snap at me, I snap back)

  • There's a lot of references to song titles and album names.

"The day the music died" is what you can expect the day bombs "nukes specifically" fly! .."Helter Skelter, birds flew off with the fallout shelter, Eight miles high and falling fast, It landed foul on the grass.

The players tried for a forward pass,

With the jester on the sidelines in a cast, air was sweet smell of perfume" etc, etc....

you people know nothing about Don McLean or his work.

  • Seen Don in California!!! Live in Concerts!!!

  • BUUDY NOT FADE AWAY

  • Seen Don in Pittsburgh.Great in a word!!

  • I went to that concert. My 8 month old niece's first concert. He did good, as well as his band.

  • I was at that concert, too. I can even hear my voice, screaming, near the end...

Doesn't really matters how old he is, but what he represents to a whole generation.

  • How old is he now?

  • he is my generation's poet

  • I was at this concert!!!

  • when was that concert?

  • Looking forward to more youtubes video .... from all those who have a chance to see Don Mclean in concert. It is quite an experience.

  • I did, and he was sick big time to the point no one could recognize him or his voice. I thought it would be the day he would die.
