ariel bender a worthy guitar replacement for mick ralfs, but not a songwriter. if that get up he has on predates kiss, well, steal from the best, i always say.
@ColinDOYLE100 Fucking idiot. So you are calling one of the top glam bands in rock history a slacker band? Where are you from, the U.S.? They had a lot more influence than All the Young Dudes you tool.
Was this after The Hoople was recorded?? Ariel was no Mick Ralphs, but "The Golden Age of Rock n Roll is still pretty good... But if you want to compare "Crash Street Kids" to " One of the Boys", you're absolutely crazy. This must have been after Mick Ralphs " appeared to be in Bad Company"... Quote from the backside of "the Hoople".
I saw that show in Philadelphia. Friend told me to go straight as he wished he did. I took the advice and am glad I did. The muppets on piano, the marionettes, Big Bird flying out for Rest in Peace. Best show I've ever seen. To this day I will put on the live Album put my head back and remember the show...Thanks Mott the Hoople
I saw them on this tour in Providence, RI. Great band, but you could tell Luther Grosvenor (Ariel Bender), an otherwise fine player, was not the right guitarist for the band. The guy was unfocused in his solos, all over the place. He knew the songs cold, but he wasn't a tight, concise player like Mick Ralphs, whose solos and fills had a beginning, middle and and an end. This guy was just throwing every riff out in the air, just trying to figure out "where do I fit with these guys?".
I like Ace but he is not part of Mott the Hoople...the lead guitar player was Mick Ronson, who played for Bowie on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars...Ian Hunter sang and was the other guitar player...
@rlawing2 jeez...the guitarist for Mott was Mick Ralphs...who left for Bad Company with Paul rogers...Mick Ronson played with Ian way later...when Mott had broken up...
I went into the San Francisco Nunn Bush Shoe store in the early 70's and they had these insane platform shoes....nothing in the store was "ordinary". It looked like a Mott the Hoople garage sale!
@rduquet if you notice...Ian hated him...he was a good guitar player but he crowds Ian at one point then almost hits him in the face with the neck of his guitar...best was when Mick Ronson played with Ian...that was magic...
@Crowsfan55 I loved Ronson, I have always felt he was one of the greatest guitar players of all time! I don't think Bowie would have made it to where he did, if Mick had not been with him.
Yeah, Ariel really does look a lot like Ace from that same era (or a couple years later) in the black and silver Kiss suit and Les Paul. It's the shoulder-wings.
Mott was one of the best back in 1972 to 1975. You almost forget how great these bands we had were, back in the EARLY 70s. Like T-Rex,The NY Dolls,Slade,Early Kiss, Lou Reed, etc. These bands might of fell under the label Glam or Glitter,or whatever, but that was just the look. After you get that out of the way you got some of the best ever kick-ass ROCK & ROLL!!!
Re: New York Dolls- best concert I ever saw was Mott The Hoople 1973 with the Dolls opening. Actually opening for both was a new band called Aerosmith (just after thier first LP had been released) (they were being called a 'new Yardbirds' but, though they played a good Train Kept A'Rollin, were bit of a disappointment). But the Dolls and Mott both killed it. Made up my mind right then & there I wanted to play rock and roll.
Now THIS is what Rock is ABOUT! Whew! I remember running away from home in NYC to take a bus to Boston after seeing them every night at the Uris Theatre for a week, when Queen was opening for them! I was only 14 or so. My friend and I took the bus, and her evil father was there to meet the bus, and he snatched her away! I was alone in Boston, and my parents thought I was on a sleepover 1/2 hour away from home. Ariel and his girlfriend made sure I was safe. What a great show & after party.
First cut off the amazing "Mott" LP. Mick Ralphs' last with the band. Must've left right after recording it. The studio version featured Andy McKay (of Roxy Music) on saxophone.
That's fun how each band member looks like Kiss' band members, Bender looks like Ace, Ian like Paul, and Griffin (the drummer if i remember) like Peter Criss!
I was never sure if Ian Hunter styled himself on Mick Farren's Ogoth ('Ogoth and Ugly Boot', Cozmic comix) or vice-versa. They were a brilliant band up to "All the Young Dudes" (Wildlife and Brain Capers), while they were still underground, then it all went so horribly wrong.
Long time Mott and Ian fan, also long time Kiss fan .
And you can't underestimate the influance this era MOTT had on early KISS, look at the shoulder things Ariel is wearing and Pete's platforms etc. I can see where "countregular" is coming from. Kiss kinda tore a page from them, darkened it up and went with it !
@motthead69 YOU'RE RIGHT! At that time there was NO band I'd rather see, apart from the Dolls, who I saw every week, pretty much, at either the Mercer Arts Center or Max's. WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE DAYS WHEN NYC WAS GOOD? WHEN WE ALL BOUGHT OUR SHOES AT PARADISE BOOTERIE IN THE ISLAND WHERE BLOOMBERG HAS HIS ANTI-SMOKING DISNEYLAND NOW...
@Indio156 The NY Dolls (especially Johny Thunders) were probably the ONLY other band (along with the "old" or vintage Rolling Stones) that even cam close to rivaling Mott but NO ONE ever did it better than Mott did in 973-74 with Aeriel in the lineup - REPEAT - NOBODY!...
@Jubeju71 Yes, the shoulder pads and the hair style, combined with 4th generation video, offers a vaguely Ace Frehley look. But hey, not much difference in the playing styles of Frehley and Luther Grosvenor (Ariel Bender), to my ears, anyway, and I grew up listening to both in the 70s. You could switch Bender and Mick Ronson and not really tell.
@KUTVgroucho Maybe you could switch Grosvenor and Ronson and not tell the difference, if you don't actually listen to music or know anything about it! According to to you, Ronson, Frehley and Grosvenor(AKA Bender)
@glishteach Trust me, I know the differences, having grown up in the 70s listening to everything and playing guitar for 30 years. Most glam rocker guitarist profiles were Les Pauls through Marshall stacks and stylistically, not too different. It was about rock theater. I placed blues influenced guitarists of that decade on a much higher plane: Clapton, Beck, Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter, or jazz influenced guitarists like Steve Howe, Frank Zappa, or even spacey David Gilmour.
@Crowsfan55 I'll stop trying to explain after this:
It was a joke. To understand the joke you would had to have been alive then, recognizing that in this clip. Ariel Bender vaguely resembles Ace Frehley, from no more than two years later. Not "way before KISS," just a couple years.
@CountRegular okay...not a funny joke...heh I was alive then...I saw Mott with Queen as the opening act...and I bought the first KISS album...but I think that was like 76...you can correct me...but I was alive then?
@CountRegular yeah...I guess it was summer of '74...but the only substitute for Mott was Ariel replacing Mick Ralphs...and I'm beginning to see the joke...you could see Ian hated Ariel...pulled a chunk of his hair out...
Buff sent one to my 12 year old son, black and white, off the Mott LP - I think it was a test pressing, check with Angel Air RECORDS to see if they actually produced them.
I remember an American critic once described "Mott the Hoople" as "An English, cross-dressing version of "Grand Funk Railroad" with even less talent, if that's possible!"...sigh...As evidenced by this rare live footage, Mott was exceptional live. Groove,Feel,Attitude,Energy & Originality; Maybe they weren't the snobbish critics' trendy fave, & their "Glam" look diminished them in the eyes of these judgemental bastards, but they were among the best live acts I've ever witnessed. Underappreciated!
@SPAZZOBOXER wow..and wow again...know your post is over 2 years old but just seeing these videos...and I could not say anything that would add to your post...and I agree cause I saw them too...they kicked ass!
@SPAZZOBOXER Critics basically hate anything that's populist rock n roll. If there was a Rolling Stone magazine in 1955, they would have snubbed Elvis in favor of Pat Boone.
@SPAZZOBOXER - Not completely - I was in a rock band in the mid 70s and played in the Baltimore-DC area clubs and there were a lot of MTH fans. We covered "Violence" and "One of the Boys" and always got a standing crowd on both songs.
