There are hundred easy things one can do besides "adding an external battery" like switching off location services, 3g, wifi, email push notifications and reducing brightness etc etc.

I read in an article about this Cydia app that works like windows task manager on your iphone and enable you to switch off unwanted open apps and save yourself some power. Refer to babarsays(dot)com
