Oh! I see! This is a "caterpillar" piston design, that only requires two pistons to expand and retract, in the right order, to make you go up! Clever! I'm sure if you can implement a 2-sided circuitry design or a loop for the "caterpillar", you'd be able to create a "return" route for the elevator.
Still, I'd be happy with simple stairs or railway to get me upstairs, until we see more simple redstone/piston designs that won't take hours to build (and troubleshoot when they bork out). ;2)
