As for the entire business of genre, Anathema and two other bands (Paradise Lost/My Dying Bride) are commonly credited with starting the doom/death scene. Their muisc has evolved and changed since and their most recent release might not be considered doom/death by many.  Regardless, they were at one time a 'metal' band and thus a 'heavy metal' band.
