Naw....rappers are slaves to the corporations who own and control record labels...but why do they want to control it?....money...and the fact that young black males have power in hip hop....tupac scared the hell out of the government and corp....by the stuff he was saying against them...so now they gotta have control.
I don't think that rap artists should be responsible for doing community service for handling services that the American Red Cross does. These artists often have their friends and family around them who are more incompetant than anything in doing anything other than funneling money into parties and foolishness.
Most people that do community service and social services are WOMEN. So why don't they push for Black women to run some things even in Hip Hop???
These rappers need to do more in the community. Because they get millions to destroy young black men...don't you see? Gangster rappers work for the government to get blacks to kill each other. The government wants blacks dead or poor so they have to hire black people to convince other blacks to make that happen!!
The same thing can be said of professional sports. Only in America can you have young men who are 17-19 years old who are given multi-million dollar contracts to play ball. They don't give the support/ money / airplay to people who are trying to help the community and get them to think. If a person is too aggressive about helping the community, they tend to ignore or vilify them.
Don't get me wrong; I don't think that people that write or deliver creatively on a mic are all knowing. For many, they don't know how to run a business let alone a community service based business. I've seen pro athletes absolutely F-UP a good idea by putting their boyz or family members in charge of something & THEY were out of their league. The boyz & fam. had NO IDEA of how to handle ANYTHING other than being paid, glorified, groupies.
Because black men didn't kill each other before gangsta rap? You see conspiracy everywhere but your point would be more relevant if you'd come up with actual facts, proofs. No black on black crime in the 50's? 60's? 70's? U sure?
Of course there were black on black crimes....but the murder rate reached its highest point when most rap was about killing. Just like NWA making the song Fuck the Police...violence against police rose 300%...is that a coincidence? If the rapper Cam'ron could get millions of inner city Black men to wear pink...what makes you think that rappers (who are paid by the white and wealthy) can't control Black kids to do anything?
How come congress dont say nothin to BET? Only thing on there is rap videos, comedy shows, and ignorant reality shows. Why is no responsibility placed in the media or corporate america? Why are the artists asked to do things which would diminish their financial gains, when corporations, who exploit the artists work, are not...
at the end of the day who can we say really care. u make one positive song then go back to the negative stuff. its up to us as individuals to try to change and have a impact
All the money spent on the Iraq war could have been spent on a war against poverty and ignorance. The government is not willing to do so, instead they persecute rappers for allegedly perpetuating the situation they come from, but thats the only way anyone will listen...
If congress is so serious about it, and they can control television, maybe congress should report, or make news programs report on the positive things that david banner does, instead of asking him to entirely change his music, form of self expression and free speech to do congress' job of education and changing conditions in the ghetto.
It is not david banner or any other artists responsibly to send a message through thier music. Like he said, its entertainment, movie stars and athletes are not expected to send out positive messages to change their community through their work.
david banner is saying that artists have to sell out to get money to do right.. Master P is saying that artists need to stop selling out no matter what and look into other means of achieving finiancial success...the truth is master P is the most right because with proper knowledge and education artists would not be in the position where they needed to sell out to get money in the first place and find themselves trapped
the bottom line is that the artist has no power its the white ceo's and a&r's that control what gets released so why is it a suprise that only negative images of black americans are portrayed? Food for thought
Personally, I dont think they should have these artists in front of this congress.. artists will be artists.. I think the real problem are the business people that control what comes out, what you see on tv, what you hear on the radio. In reality, the concious, positive and responsible aspect of rap are out there and always have been.
It's just not that it is presented to you for your consumer consumption, so people dont even know its out there for them to listen to and support. Sure they may use a few bad words here or there but like Dr. Dyson pointed out, presidents of the USA dont always have the cleanest mouths either.
For example, Talib Kweli and Common are bigger right now than they've ever been in their careers..but ask the first person you bump into today if they've heard of either..I bet not. If they have they probably think they just came out this year..they've been around for over 10 years. What if artists like Kweli had gotten the company/financial/media support that say...Souljah Boy is getting right now, 10 years ago?
There are some rappers out right now that have had MORE videos played on BET/MTV/VH1 THIS YEAR than TOTAL videos I've seen of more positive rappers in SEVERAL YEARS. Why is that? Think about it..
This is a joke! If this jobless folks at congress were serious, they would start by holding hollywood accountable for the ills in society...how many times do you see a movie in which a gun trotting bad ass seeks and metes out revenge on those that supposedly wronged him. HELLO!!! This is exactly what these ignorant kids act out!!
africans do not have to justify their adulthood with racists nor apologist for crackers. during slavery and segregation era..it was common to refer to africans as boy and gal and those days are long gone. some people need to wake up...
we created a hunger for gangsta rap in our music. just yesterday i was coming out of the store, seen this teenager, he was listening to some killem up bang bang music. he had a look on his face like he was ready to murder some1. i honestly believe music is absorbed in the human sub-conscious. the human body aborbs everything it sees, hears, smell, taste and touch. the mind is like a data bank. you record things mentally positive and negative.
it was always a hunger for violence in America rap is not the first music that encourage ppl to do something that is violent or unrightious. I agree with you ppl like the bad things in life and ppl produce it, And not just in music but other madia also and it effect ppl and help to continue the cycle of desiree and production. Question is why this happens and what can be done to stop it. Some will say nothing can be done it will continue forever.
This ticks me off. At least Banner and Master P had the kindness to appear to the hearing. Where are the heavy metal artist who do pretty much the same thing in their own stereotype? Why aren't they there? Is this about music or Hip Hop? How come Hip Hop is singled out in this hearing. Man this is so unconstitutional. Anyone here agrees with me please!?
that is the truth. all those years up until the present day, heavy metal groups have been into occult practices. hypnotizing the youth. your right, why just hip hop. they should of had artist from every music genre. everyone has to take responsibility for this.
i agree iskaze, he sounds ignant sayin he refuses to try to change his message to be more positive. just cuz a problem exists doesnt mean it should be glamorized and promoted, thats just helping to perpetuate problems.
No not really.his point was right.he's an artist. He was protecting the right to speak freely about what he see's....while telling dude help change the things i see.Real street reporter.
Oh yeah, I agree definitely. His arrogance and trying to explain too much is making him lose credibility among them. You can't always be street, especially in front of important people like congress.
I'm happy to see dude speaking in a room addressing good points.I don't care to much about hinm ajusting himself.i kinda like .....more get into the facts & he did well compared to other rappers that wouldn't even know how to address the issues.
I hate that some dumb fucker messed up the audio, so that we can't hear what's being said. Whoever did this is a stupid motherfucker.

Frankly, I agree with both Dyson and David Banner!!!
Banner's right....you have no right to tell one person or group how to run their lives when they won't tell others the same thing nor offer any help.
Personally, these hearings won't change my love for hip-hop and are a waste of time anyway; but I'm glad cats stood up to those two-faced politicians.
