@with33 thats why they use AK74s not AK47s. the AK74 has less recoil than the M16 with the same accuracy and range but the 5.45 round has better penetrating power against body armour.
If that isnt enough for you, izhmash just unveiled the AK12 two weeks ago, with new ergonomics and tonnes of picitanny rails for optics and accessories. it will come in a 'light' version for chambering 5.45, 5.56, 7.62x39 and will also have a 'heavy' version for chambering 7.62x51.

@fludblud In Afghanistans was not uncommon to use both AKM (7.62mm) and AK-74 (5.45mm) rifles in the same unit. The main reason was the bullet of the 5.45mm cartridge. The military establishement, conservative in any country, was concerned of what they considered poor stopping power of the 5.45mm bullet, so the famous bullet with empty space at the tip of the metal jacket was introduced. That bullet was unpredictable and very damaging in soft tissue but had near zero penetrating ability.

Nobody shoots single shots at close range anyway, so no need to worry about stopping power/action. I never heard of 7.62x51 AK versions, at least soviet. May be you mean Galil? It has AK's scheme of action. 5.45x39, 5.56x45, 7.62x39 -chambered versions of AK produced, true. There is no such thing as 7.62x54R AK. You probably mean PKM. Also Kalashnikov's but machinegun

@b1005c I read in one book, not wrote. Gracious goodness, I am not a writer of any kind. Sorry for the silly typo (see the prev. comment) So, for the 7.62x54R, its still used, only modified heavily, naturally. Used mostly with PK/PKM medium machine guns and SVD sniper rifle. It is not recommended but possible to use machine-gun ammo for sniper rifle, but watch for the tracer rounds, of course.

@sass225 I never heard about sa-7 used because it has built-in features to prevent hitting Soviet-operated aircraft. Stinger was by far the most effective SAM used on Soviets in A-stan, but it took less than a year for them to design and install a set of countermeasures rendering it almost useless. I'm lazy to look for exact fugures but overall it was less than 20 Hinds shotdown with Stinger and twice that much damaged. It scored a few fixed wing mostly Mig-21 and Su-22 as well.

If that isnt enough for you, izhmash just unveiled the AK12 two weeks ago, with new ergonomics and tonnes of picitanny rails for optics and accessories. it will come in a 'light' version for chambering 5.45, 5.56, 7.62x39 and will also have a 'heavy' version for chambering 7.62x51.

@fludblud In Afghanistans was not uncommon to use both AKM (7.62mm) and AK-74 (5.45mm) rifles in the same unit. The main reason was the bullet of the 5.45mm cartridge. The military establishement, conservative in any country, was concerned of what they considered poor stopping power of the 5.45mm bullet, so the famous bullet with empty space at the tip of the metal jacket was introduced. That bullet was unpredictable and very damaging in soft tissue but had near zero penetrating ability.

Nobody shoots single shots at close range anyway, so no need to worry about stopping power/action. I never heard of 7.62x51 AK versions, at least soviet. May be you mean Galil? It has AK's scheme of action. 5.45x39, 5.56x45, 7.62x39 -chambered versions of AK produced, true. There is no such thing as 7.62x54R AK. You probably mean PKM. Also Kalashnikov's but machinegun

The comment was a bit caustic, mentioning traditional "gigantomania" of american small arms, just look at all these .45 Glocks! 7.62x54R is one of the oldest rifle rounds still in use and was used with Mosin-Nagant rifle and russian Maxim machine gun even in Russo-Japanese war of 1905. 7.62x39 is intermediate

Sorry for the silly typo (see the prev. comment) So, for the 7.62x54R, its still used, only modified heavily, naturally. Used mostly with PK/PKM medium machine guns and SVD sniper rifle. It is not recommended but possible to use machine-gun ammo for sniper rifle, but watch for the tracer rounds, of course.

@sass225 I never heard about sa-7 used because it has built-in features to prevent hitting Soviet-operated aircraft. Stinger was by far the most effective SAM used on Soviets in A-stan, but it took less than a year for them to design and install a set of countermeasures rendering it almost useless. I'm lazy to look for exact fugures but overall it was less than 20 Hinds shotdown with Stinger and twice that much damaged. It scored a few fixed wing mostly Mig-21 and Su-22 as well.

@zipacna1980 The Stinger,redeye and strella 2 never did shoot down that many aircraft but they did force counter measures the stinger could not shoot down at helos below it so the hinds flew low using ground for cover nap of the earth flying the american army calls it. this made they more vulnerable to 23mm and 12.7 fire but the best defense against hind was not to let it see you helos are loud if your paying attention you hear them coming same with tanks

@MrEminemTv my freinds killed a lot of mujahideens...and they killed soviet soldiers...but they also have still some freinds among mujahideens...you understand nothing in that war...mujahideens can not fight against such armies like US or Soviet army...only thing they can do (and they did and do) it is diversions...it is different thing...and it is not battle...soviet politics didn`t understand this...and they put on army the function of police...americans made the same mistake.

No, that is what media is telling you. Right now in Afghanistan, the war is no more guerilla warfare, but real warfare. The thing is that in the beginning of the invasion the mujahideen were not organizev nor numerous. But after a while they became organized and they stopped guerilla warfare and start man to man battles.

@MrEminemTv ...and according to that war the special forces of USSR could do anything with any mujahideens if they had an order...it was not just simple "to see = to kill"...there were a lot of politics there too. And what is shown on this video is just a sample...the level of training of Soviet spetsnaz was one of the best in the world.

bullshit the only reason achmed had a chance is because we the U.S.A funded an gave them ground to air missiles which saved there ass from airstrikes an Ronald Reagan bankrupt Russia with the help Saudi whom dropped the price of oil by flooding the market which was Russia main revenue. The U.S.A could have won this had we a real President not a dumb ass from texas who couldn't tell the difference between WAR an nation building,yes it's to late now an we should get the Hell out.

@000001andrew So be it, but the us funded & supplied them for their own agenda, they didnt want the soviets to be sitting on and controlling the $1trillion in unmined afghan resources. Osama & al queda is propoganda bullshit and just an excuse the us needed to give its people to invade a sovereign people. Ironic the most powerful nation in the world is losing to a bunch of shephards and farmers! The us cant even nuke them or the land would be useless & they cant start mining there!

@000001andrew maybe u need to read some history, the soviets spent 10 years in afghanistan, lost about 60000 soldiers and left with their tails b/w their legs..all fighting"achmed" who coincidentally has never lost to western armies. The Afghans have only ever lost to the Sikhs of INdia.

@muaythairaja the afghans were being slaughtered until US government started to sell them weapons like stinger missiles AK74s in bulk land mines mortars and the list goes on and on the couldnt defeat the russian gunships at all and were being mowed down like grass until we supplied them with AA

@MrEminemTv no they did not "beat the shit" out of soviets, it was akin to the vietnam war. we had to leave because we were losing too many soldiers for such little gain. it was about 3 dead muj per dead soviet, like in vietnam, it was 3 dead viet per dead american, but the cost was still too high for practically little gain. plus internal strife back home made the government tire of trying to run a war

That is soviet propaganda. You do not know how many soviets were killed for real. Not 15,000 but 30,000. The mujahideen were only 50,000-70,000 and only 30,000-35,000 of them were killed.
