this is when u.s movie industry still had some space for art.. today they are fucked by the military sponsor that pushes their whey in in every single project to present their psycho mercenaries as heroes
Man, why didn't they have him as a consultant for the Aquaman arc on Entourage? Can you imagine how much more entertaining it would have been if there was a crazy special effects guy calling Cameron a Goddamn Motherfucker?
well I have and let me tell you: Impatience and a burning desire for control and order ends up exploding in you.
Like when I was trying to film an exterior scene where an inspector arrived by car at someone's home. While my UNDISCIPLINED actors were waiting, I had to rush myself and shout left and right to convince four people including my stupid sister and her dumbass boyfriend to maybe leave the set. And they wouldn't understand why.
As a director, I agree with you. It is our job to express exactly what we need to see on screen to the FX creators so they know exactly what to create and how to get the effect. Granted, on a set fresh ideas are born constantly and it is then that the relationship between a director trying to get his vision and the FX specialist trying to deliver it takes hold. A combative relationship is never good for on-set morale even if the results are movie gold.
LOL dang! Steve is walking on the edge XD I Love it! Unfortunately the directors know nothing about the delicacy of the creations we make so if something breaks were screwed. But theres not much we can do about it because directors have all the money. I loved the puppets of the Abyss. Beautifully done!
Steve, in my opinion you took it to him lightly. A boss, no matter the position, should not treat employees like shit. That is what the military is for. You had every right. Pretty fuckin cool to hear.
The " I can hear you Steve " is a fact of the "legend" kind, I already knew about this by reading it in a book. Glad to hear it from you.
Hearing stories about work on set that are not the " everybody's happy and so friendly " promo videos' everlasting speech is a precious thing, so people can change their mind about filmaking ( and its fame ) a bit.
Thanks for sharing this, Steve. Keep them coming ! :)

@multirevelator
as a director, you're always responsible of the set, which pretty much makes the set yours, and respectfully so.
