Awesome movie, i remembered when i was 12 18 years ago thanks to reading my city's local TV guide to see what will come on friday/saturday nights and knew i had to watch this on a friday night, loved it. I also loved and watched Heavy Metal, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival and American Pop, they ruled my world. I even made taped uncensored copies of VHD, this movie and RC on video when i was 13, bought HM when i was 15 and AP when i was 17. Who remembers those?
@gachoobieka "HAIL BEELZEBUB! HAIL SATAN!! HAIL BEELZEBUB!" But it seems that this clip is the cleaned up version that was probably released in America. Now the words have been garbled to protect the sensitivities of the wussy-brained and braun-tongued.
It's similar to what happened with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind when it came out in the US from New World Pictures in 1985 under the title Warriors of the Wind, they changed the story to americanized it including the names of the characters and heavily cut it from 117 minutes to 86 minutes.
This movie kicks ass. It sucks that this movie flopped at the box office, sadly most people don't know a really good movie even if it bit them in the ass.
@narukofan2 Blame the management at MGM. They took over at United Artists, the original distributor, and proceeded to make ridiculous demands (re-dubbing, story changes), then lose interest in the project altogether.
If it had been released properly, I'm sure it could have found an audience. The fact that anyone cares about it almost 30 years after it was made testifies to its quality.
@eddystone333 There are some fans there who pay homage to this film in other works. Did you know the Nelvaans in Star Wars: Clone Wars, the 2003 series, were based off of Angel and Omar?
@Scoonertuna The comparison to Bluth is appropriate, as it was made around the same time as 'The Secret of NIMH'. Ironically, it also premiered the same year as Ralph Bakshi's last notable picture, 'Fire and Ice'. In a way, it does serve as a bridge between the Adult Cartoons of the '70s and the Animation Renaissance in the '80s.
for those who feel bad about the dead of Zip, in the Canadian extended version he appears alive during the ending meaning that he actually survived, MGM edited probably so the movie looked more serious
@junque21 If anyone going to this show is reading this, at an opportune moment, you MUST call out requesting Send Love Through or just reference R&R. I'd love to see how they'd react.
You know, my boyfriend bought this movie and introduced it to me...I love it. Even though the animation is old, the old ones are the best. I love the small lovey stuff the movie has ^__^
Mok Is like..Iggy pop and David bowies love child...XD
well Debbie Harry redid her version of it.. It's Called Maybe just Be sure.. is good just wish this one had been redone.. This was amazing considering neither of them Cheap trick or debbie harry had heard the other persons half of the song.. came out amazing...
@talamarthraydin Some of the songs were released. Born to Raise Hell (the first song the band played) was an actual Cheap Trick song from the album "Sex, America". I've found what sounds like a studio recording of "Ohm Sweet Ohm" (Robin Zander, Cheap Trick, or Ohmar and the Daycares). The other songs I've been able to find with some creative Googling - most are from the movie but some are pretty good quality. Hopefully with the BR version there will be demand for the soundtrack. :)
@draggardevir Yea I Know alot of the songs are on each groups album.. and Blondie even redid Angels song calling it Maybe Just for sure. but I would love to get the Duet with Debbie Harry and Cheap Trick.. and is so hard to find a good one =(.. And I agree with ya they should have made a Soundtrack!
This is great, but the characters remind me of Goof Troop rejects lol! Interesting note from Wikipedia "According to the commentary on the DVD release, the effects for the demon in the movie's final sequence were produced by smearing cow brains over one plane of a multiplane camera." Much like the cover art for Metalica's "Load" and "Reload"
@rpsanders26 Fuck you dude, Heavy Metal was my CHILDHOOD! lol.. i mean i love this movie too but the music isnt even a quarter as good as Heavy Metal! still, this movie is WAY worth buying on blue ray if some stupid corporate douches figures out people WANT to buy it on BR.. cant we all just enjoy what we enjoy without putting other masterpieces down?
@SatansMullet You tell him dude! Even though Rock'n'Rule is totally kickass and was just as much a part of my own childhood as Heavy Metal was, i still think that Heavy Metal is a superior film in many ways.
I thought both were cool. Did you ever see this movie with HM on TBS back in the early 90's with Vampire Hunter D, American Pop and Robot Carnival? i did when i was 12 17 years ago.
"If I can sing it up, I can sing it back" I think is the quote. Awesome movie, I have it on VHS tape somewhere. I love this last song. Thanks for posting this.
Oh man so many memories when I watch this, I think the first time I've watched this was when I was either still in Elementary or Starting off in Middle School. I'm gonna have to go on a hunt for it tomorrow and hope I can find the DVD if not, then I'll look online.
They have it on DVD! I rented it from Hollywood Video! Unfortunately I can't find the soundtrack. :( I'm sure a couple of weird record stores have it on 8 track or something.
This movie made the Canadian animation industry in a boom for many many years. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen to this day and still captivates me to this day.
This ending only proves that evil can loose its fgrip and good will come out kicking its ass royally.
God this movie is insanely awesome. I <3 the fuckin ending man, shivers down my spine. Memories are great. I might go watch it if I can't find the old video tape. Lol.
they released the original dub in the special edition boxed set so you can get it but is copied off a vhs copy the master reels were destroyed in a fire, the quality is passable but not great, unfortunately, I like the original dub for omar much better, at least shell out a little xtra for the special adition it's got a suprising amount of documentary and production footage
I fucking love this ending. The idea that the singing was so powerful it sent the demon back was so fucking cool when i was a kid......plus the girl was hot ;)
I remember taping it when it came to one of those movie channels way back when. My brother and I watched over and over until the tape got totally worn out. A true cult classic icon. Thanks for the best part! I have got to get this DVD.
Awesome . I love this stuff. When I was at collage I had a lil' punk band called The 781s (187 in reverse califas police code for 'murder'") We used to cover Angle's Song as well as My Name Is Mok. Our guitarist was a chick so she and I did Angle's Song as a duet. I always had to shout "hit it" instead of "girls" before the chorous on My Name Is Mok because the band was mostly guys and "girls" just didnt fit.
Hell yeah dude. Back in those days there were alot of PG movies that really kicked ass. Nowadays even the "gritty" R rated stuff is unimaginitive fluff.

@Scoonertuna I had heard about that. More importantly Nelvana, the animation company, went onto bigger things and is still around today.
