Red wigglers, and most lady bugs are not native to America. Red wigglers should not be released into areas with natural heavy mulch layers like forest. They can be invasive there. There is a native American Lady bug that is actually being replaced by the European varieties. The number of spots is how to id but I forget how many. There is a project somewhere dedicated to searching. Killer snails supposedly will die out after killing the others.
@diva123abc yes, even though we are trying to find a "natural approach" man has been known to make things worse by meddling with nature.... best to look at the whole system overall and be aware of potential consequences.
@diva123abc Red Wigglers are too native to America. Where ever you got your info it is wrong. The lady bug is not being replaced. There are more than 5000 different variety of lady bugs and the lady bug that most see here in the United States which is the red and black IS native to America. No disrespect but I think someone needs to go back to Entomology Classes because your info is dead wrong. One thing I do not like is someone giving out false information.
thanks for bringing us the ladybug guy. we have a worm lady at our farmers mkt but ive not seen a ladybug guy. wonder if he grows those himself or if he just resells them??
Lady bugs are not a native insect in the US. They were imported from Australia to save the potato crops from potato bugs. Red wigglers are also very good for fishing. That way you can grow and catch your food.
John, for organic cabbage worm control, try a product with bacillus thurengensis in it. (Dipel, for example) It's a bacteria that you spray on the leaves and it makes the little catepillars die when they digest it within 2-3 days.
Cabbage worms can be controlled with BT, Bacillus thurungis. It will eliminate ALL butterfly caterpillers, too; so be careful in it's use. From a Horticulture webpage: BT is Bacillus thurungis(sp). BT is a type of bacteria that is lethal
to certain insects. Fungus gnats and caterpillars, to be specific.
Bear this in mind, in that if you have a butterfly garden, this is NOT
Another great video- thanks!

I'm not sure, but those snails may be invasive and cause harm to local species. Especially if they survive the seasons in the south.
