Does anyone know what the music is here? I'm thinking it sort of sounds like some of the stuff coming from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop around this time. Does anyone know for sure?
@HackneyEquine I'm fairly certain that a pelican doesn't see a seashell as a beautiful symbol of mathematical perfection coupled with resilience, etc. I'm pretty sure they just see a food source.
The only mistake that I found in this great film was includine frogs and toads in the reptile group, they're amphibious, and getting away this little slide from Svanmajer's the rest of the film shows that he is just a genious!!
I think he is also commenting on the obsessive endeavour in keeping nature within our own set social order. Thus, the classifications that Zoologists beset upon the natural world in the attempt to maintain order. And in our conquest to organize, to place our imprint of what should and should not be, and control-, we seek to not survive in but to defeat nature.
That and of course the eating sequences... They don't only refer to the lust of defeating nature as you said but also to the fact, that mankind does not seech for art or beauty, but simply for something to fulfill their most primitive urges like hunger... At least thats my opinion
Interesting point, which only solidifies how despite our hopes to be above our own primitive nature- even going as far as to suggest that we were created and are simply separate from the animal kingdom- is perhaps absurd. Leading to the question are we really ranked separately from the nature or are we still just primitive apes? Are we really just fooling ourselves- and will we forever be on the verge of self-destruction because repressing our inner demons will lead us to thus?
@Theaceoffate I find it an interesting contradiction that the Animal Kingdom is full of such beauty, but nothing in it is capable of recognizing it. Only humans can be aware of such aesthetic principals and even then, it's still beauty as defined by humans.
@mardeninthegarden The meaning of beauty is stretched in this instance. Beauty is a human concept and never truly agreed upon, but what holds true for both the animal kingdom and humans is that there is a pleasurable response to a meaningful stimulus. Think of mating in the animal kingdom. Some dance, preen themselves, vocalize sounds, etc to attract a mate. The degree of analysis and manipulation may be different, but the purpose and pleasurable experience of "beauty" are still there.
This film reminds me of what it's like as a kid visiting a museum of natural history and viewing the specimens all lined up in jars or other places, and being terribly unnerved and grossed out by a lot of the creatures.
the music reminds me of the mothers' uncle meat, great!

Reminds me of the experience of visiting the museum as a child and being deeply disturbed - but also fascinated - by all the creepy specimens.

Humans destroy nature then destroy themselves. This is an ealry work of Svankmajer but he already was a great visual artist.
