I must say, I was astounded to see how many OS X features Microsoft ripped out of the poor old Macintosh to make Windows 7 "new features". So needless to say, Microsoft has lost innovation, and is stealing OS design ideas from Steve Jobs again. The Mac Dock is way better than Windows Task Bar.

linux is not a gui to unix. linux is a kernel. unix and linux both generally make heavy use of gnu utils. unix conforms entirely to the single unix specification. Some linuxes do as well, but it is not a strict requirement.

Essentially, people are generally very confused about these concepts. Linux is a kernel. Unix is a specification. Neither is an operating system in itself. (in a modern context)

There really is no one word to accurately describe a linux os as a whole.
