  • This is probably from 1968. Jymie Merritt began using the Ampeg Baby Bass around then, and used it on an album with Roach called "Members, Don't Get Weary".

  • Contrary to the Jazz orthodoxy...I view Roy Haynes in his musical prime a superior drummer to Roach.

I caught Roach live circa '85 featuring Odean Pope. I was less than inspired with Roach's playing.

  • those white folks look stuffy as hell mann

  • Max's brush technique is simply unmatched. One of the best jazz greats ever

  • Terrific band... except for Odean Pope. He is hysterically sharp and plays like a high school kid. Sorry... he does. Cowell is amazing.

  • Anybody else see that guy creepin on girl at 0:12 lmao

  • @murffy1988

how the fuck is that creeping? he's just looking at her. i'm so sick of that word being used to describe everything nowadays, along with "sketch" and "stalker"

  • @bookmaster89 Hey man it was just an observation. Don’t take it personal haha.

  • Professors called him professor.... Max Roach!

  • nice premier kit..must be late 60s....

  • beautiful!!!

  • Better than Max Weinberg.....:7)

  • I was born too late...

  • too bad the recording quality back then isn't what it is today - cant even hear the brushes on cymbals.

  • nice bass!!

  • Beautiful performance... the thing that I find interesting is that the only black people that you see are the ones on stage. There are none who are shown in the audience. It is an unfortunate sign of the times back then.

  • Hmmm speaking of the audience HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I think I enjoy the first shots of the audience as much as the music itself! First there is the bored cute lady...Then the glasses! all my god the glasses. Did you see the the size of those frames on the guy who is hidden by the other guy with big glasses?! Fantastic!

  • I think this was filmed at a festival in Italy.

  • Lugano is in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland. Beautiful performance indeed.

  • why would you find that interesting...? I only hear great music and wonder what the audience has to do with it??

  • to Airman410 :this s not an unfortunate sign of the times back then.how can you find some black people in Lugano...(switzerland)

    especially in those years.

  • Stanley Cowell being good

  • hell yeah, listen to him just ride those changes. cowell's the man.

  • thank you for posting.

  • odean pope (ts)

  • Merritt is playing the Ampeg Electric Upright bass developed around 1960, so this is from the sixties. Maybe the louder bass is affording Max the opportunity to really lay into those cymbals.

  • amazing brushes, anyone know if those are 16th notes or triplets when max plays all that stuff within the brush pattern??

  • Wow - well spotted. I'm guessin' (1&a, 2&a, 3&a,4&a - really fast). Trips?

  • Really, does anyone know what year this was? I get the feeling from parts of the piano solo, and tenor solo, that this group was a little ahead of it's time..

  • Since this is his quintet then it has to be between 1954 and 1956. Because Richie Powell the pianist and Clifford Brown the trumpeter were killed in 56. It also looks like Sonny Rollins on tenor who replaced Harold Land in 1955 it is either '55 or '56.

  • I think you've got the line up a little confused. That is Stanley Cowell on piano for sure. Which means that the date would most likely be late 60's as Cowell played in Roaches band from 1967 to 1970. Yay for Max Roach!

  • i agree ....kool chart

  • Chales Tolliver was the trumpeter for Max Roach's quintet between '67 and '69, so this is somewhere in that neighborhood.

  • I honestly think that the hair styles of the audience and the lettering in the background indicate to me that this might be around 1964 or maybe up to around 1966 or so. That's just my take.

  • 1968, pretty sure

  • Its strange that Roach chooses to move over the 'sticks' on the last 8 bars of the piano solo (rather than coincide with the start of the trumpet solo) !! ??

  • incredible...listen to that beautiful swing...

  • Thanks very much for the posting. Do you know when this concert was recorded?

Stanley Cowell is a far better pianist than his lack of recognition warrants.

  • merritt's eyes were closed throughout his solo -that was funky! great clip, thanks for the post.

  • kool beanz....

  • Charles Tolliver-tr.Odean Pope-t.s.Stanley Cowell-p.

Jimmie Merrit-b.The tune is Bud Powell´s "Parisian Thourougfare".Thanks for posting it!
