When you make ice cream by hand you use, Rock Salt to cause the Ice to freeze to make your ice cream. So the kid is on to something, just most everyone else is to busy putting everyone else down to see what can be done when you put your mind to it. Needs work but a great start and you have to start somewere.

Actually, that's not true. Salt water has a lower freezing point than fresh water. Once the salt hits the ice, the meltoff becomes salt water, and cannot refreeze at the same temperature as fresh water. The fresh water ice surrounding the salt water is kept at a lower temperature. It's been proven that using salt water keeps the fresh water ice colder for a longer period, slowing the melting process. Try it, you'll see.
