Are you talking about the track on The Final, or the track on Music from the Edge of Heaven? I heard the mix was slightly different on each, with corrections made on the US "Music" .. It was a mostly mono mix in the US, with only slight snippets of ambience appearing in the left and right channels.

The Music from the Edge of Heaven was US only. I had the UK 12" EP The Edge of Heaven both as double 7" or 4 track 12". Discogs 425405

Also, The Final LP.

If the track was mostly mixed in mono it could explain the poor sound and volume dips. Though I remember that the guitar stabs alternated from left to right...

So was the mono mix to give it a 60s sound?
