Some are motivated by creationism, others by homosexuality, Zionism, Eschatology, Islamofascism, etc. Often one group is totally unconcerned by the motivating force of another group, but will help them anyway in exchange for help in the future. And you're right, the general attitude seems to be "Oh it's OK for us to use 'gay' as a pejorative because we're using it against bigots." I doubt they would find the use of certain racial epithets as inoffensive, even if they were applied to KKK members.

Read the sidebar where he takes issue with the online slogan involving gays and lesbians, and refers to it as "wickedness".
It was not a huge part, but still not absent. That's all it takes to qualify as irony.
