You are supposed to try to get out of the building if you can, but if you run into fire, or smoke...you're supposed to try to make your way back up to get as far away from the fire and smoke as possible. This was the case with Kevin Cosgrove, who passed away in WTC 2. He was a fire marshal. He knew what to do.

If I was the operator I would have asked if they could go to a different floor up or down. It would be better if she could reach a different floor. She is obviously suffering. you gotta realize that as bad as it was, the operator probably did not expect that building to collapse, theres really only so much they can do over a phone, and the firefighters fought til the last second, as much as the people who were in the tower working. people shitting on the operator are looking at all of this AFTER the collapse, if they didnt go down, a lot of the people who died in the collapse could have made it to safety.

The dispatcher already knows that she is going to die! What they are trained to do is remain calm because "their call will most likely be used on broadcast news" so, it is in their best interest to not make themselves look bad! THIS IS THE TRUTH!!!

I agree that this operator did fine (maybe the "how you doing" was grossly out of place but I imagine that that is just an automatic, something they get so used to saying that they say it even out of appropriate context). She had to ask her questions just to get her out of "I'm gonna die" mode as much as she could. If she'd said something like "it's not looking good for you guys," the girl probably would have gone beserk. It may sound cruel, but false hope is good in this situation

I think what is disturbing is there WAS one stairwell that was passable but few used it. A few ppl. from the 104th floor used this stairwell and walked all the way down to safety. Why didn't this poor young women and the other 4 find this!?
@hanna23able there was smoke and utter chaos in this disaster, they could not find the stair way. It most likely took them by surprise, and they could not find it. It does not have to be fire on the floor due to the fact the metal was conducting the heat from the fires on the floor below. It must have been an inferno...the poor people in the towers -to go this way.

If I was the operator I would have asked if they could go to a different floor up or down. It would be better if she could reach a different floor. She is obviously suffering. If she could have reached a higher floor she still would have died but not by burning up. Also, one last thing, fuck people who side with terrorists

The operator did a good job of trying to keep her calm. The operator had no idea the building was about to collapse so there was no way to warn her further.

you gotta realize that as bad as it was, the operator probably did not expect that building to collapse, theres really only so much they can do over a phone, and the firefighters fought til the last second, as much as the people who were in the tower working. people shitting on the operator are looking at all of this AFTER the collapse, if they didnt go down, a lot of the people who died in the collapse could have made it to safety.

What I really don't understand is why the port authority kept telling people to stay in their offices after the north tower was hit. I'm sure many who work in hi rise buildings normally have to evacuate if there is a fire. Why did they do that?

If the operator sincerely cared about her safety she would just tell her the grim truth! These operators are trained to remain OBJECTIVE and not become emotionally attatched to the caller. The dispatcher already knows that she is going to die! What they are trained to do is remain calm because "their call will most likely be used on broadcast news" so, it is in their best interest to not make themselves look bad! THIS IS THE TRUTH!!!

@NWPsilocybe No one was ever trained up for this. God bless the operater for staying with this poor soul until the last. She will have this, and probably many similar calls, going through her head for the rest of her life. I hope the knowledge that she didn't let someone die alone, is enough comfort for what she must relive daily. The truth would have done less good than her compassion did. I highly doubt she was worried about the newscast. We should all worry about the larger truth.

I agree that this operator did fine (maybe the "how you doing" was grossly out of place but I imagine that that is just an automatic, something they get so used to saying that they say it even out of appropriate context). She had to ask her questions just to get her out of "I'm gonna die" mode as much as she could. If she'd said something like "it's not looking good for you guys," the girl probably would have gone beserk. It may sound cruel, but false hope is good in this situation

So sad :-( She wasn't alone when she died and was with firemen when she called her mother.They had managed to get to the 44th floor. Unfortunately to late. The operator did a fantastic job keeping Mellisa as calm as possible, Amazing the firemen got
there and neally rescued her. God bless Mellisa and the Firemen that also lost their lives.

I think what is disturbing is there WAS one stairwell that was passable but few used it. A few ppl. from the 104th floor used this stairwell and walked all the way down to safety. Why didn't this poor young women and the other 4 find this!?

@hanna23able there was smoke and utter chaos in this disaster, they could not find the stair way. It most likely took them by surprise, and they could not find it. It does not have to be fire on the floor due to the fact the metal was conducting the heat from the fires on the floor below. It must have been an inferno...the poor people in the towers -to go this way.
