Kelly was also attracted to colourful boats in the south of France. He noted the horizontal bands of bright colour on them (see Yves-Alain Bois' book 'Ellsworth Kelly: the Early Drawings'). It seems to be from here that he first had the idea to make vertical monochromatic panels. But I don't think we should necessarily try to pin his work down in such a way - birds nor boats.
