Great to listen to, as ever. Many thanks Noiresprit2004. You know, despite the wow and flutter on the tape, I still prefer old recordings. Maybe folks valued good music more then than today when everything is so high tech and soon forgotten.
Yes. It is "Allegro Ma non Tanto". Fast but not too fast....right? Even though that is the case, there is a general standard metronome marking that about 95% of people use, and there isn't much deviation from that...I guess this would be one of the exceptions.
@theoceanave you realize Oistrakh played at the same temp? check the video, slow and student like? i think not. you know why? because a fast temp does not necessarily always make a great performance. there are many student who can play very fast but very poorly.
I never cared much for Oistrakh's recordings of this piece (I wasn't alive when he was performing it...or recording incidentally.) Yes, if you can't play it correctly at the indicated tempo, then don't play it. But the problem here is a lack of imagination. I like to throw caution to the wind when I play this piece...Slbelius' writing allows for that. I have heard some boring recordings of this piece and it is simply because the performer made poor interpretative choices.
I was wondering if anyone could give some advice on this violin training program? It's put out by a violin teacher named Eric Lewis. I was given a violin for christmas and was given a stupid book that I can't figure out. Looking forward to your comments: Here is the link I found on google:w w w (dot) getgoodreviews (dot) com/go/violin_lessons (dot) php
Hai, I'm American, too! You know, you guys are judging from the video, & not from live, I think there will be a big difference when you listen to her live. I think these old timers' got the style & poise. The younger generation should learn from them. She is not only marvelous performer, and she is beautiful. She is an icon for today's woman.
I'm such a stupid american that I didn't even think to check out if the violinist was hot or not. Maybe I should have looked instead of listened. Well, shit, I be a real dumb people.
puts me in mind of Lester Piggott riding a huge chestnut in one of York's classics some years ago. Standing by the rail as he went by with those very short stirrups going like the wind, way ahead of the field. Utterly breathtaking and unforgettable. Sylvia Marcovici has the same effect on me with her music.
generally you would like to have an emotional buildup that comes from crescendos and change in tempos. in this case, though her technique is great, it lacks that hook, line, sinker as a consequence of the same medium tempo all through the piece. i think this could have potentially been an awesome performance. now its just good
Her tone is amazing, as is her technique. But it sounds a little on the pedantic side - the tempo is not quite fast enough. She has never been a musical risk-taker, and her performances don't sizzle the way some others do. This concerto is all about throwing caution to the wind - and although the performance is enjoyable, it doesn't leave you wanting much more.
listen, at level, its not a risk to play it slightly faster, believe me... she can, its an artistic choice that she makes in making certain parts a bit slower so that the next parts have a different feel toward them...

Even though I don't play violin and can't comment on the finite technical aspects of her playing,I have to say that whatever Ms. Marcovici may be "lacking" in technicalities she makes up for with raw energy combined intelligently with musicianship to make even non-violin players take notice.
shes a great player but she plays this mvmt and the first quite weakley, there isn't power, but her left hand technique is unbelivable, pretty close to heifetz's, her bow seems a bit awkward and crooked though, she's not using enough elbow motion and man does she lifts her shoulder alot when she does an upbow, i think oistrakh's recording is unbeatable techniqually and musicially.
The Albani looks to have a Stainer type arching which isn't surprising since I think he was a Stainer student. I presume this affects the power of Marcovici's performance since violins in that category are better known for their mellow but not powerful tone.
This is a good choice of tempo, and it is certainly a choice. The lady could, and still can,"lay it down."

This video is from 1976. Surely, the Mme.Marcovici perform of the Sibelius violin
Concerto can only be compared to that of Christian Ferras.

Slow and boring and student-like. Yawn. Certain pieces, you can take more liberties with the tempos. Not the Sibelius, though.
theoceanave 1 year ago
@theoceanave , yes you can take liberty with temp , but look at the temp marking for this mvt before you criticize .

This comes close to the great Kulenkampff-Furtwängler version. Brava, you are excellent.
I hope one day those stupid Americans will stop staring and commenting your looks and remember that music is something that you listen to.

Not all Americans. I agree with you. Music is to be listened to.

I think , getting the notes right in tune is better than playing at full speed with almost none in tune.
