  • I think the problem between Catholics and Protestant's in my view is the idea of the Bible being interpreter of Bible rather than the Bible being a product of the Church and the need for the Church to guide Christian's. I think Matthew sees Peter as the rock on which the church was built on, however, John, Luke and Mark explicitly don't. However, absolute answers are not available, otherwise we would all agree. We need protestant in the Catholic church because of their love of the Bible.

  • "All you need is scripture and the inspiritation of the Holy Spirit?" There is 30,000 churches but only one Holy Spirit and one truth. That is why Jesus built his ONE Church on the 'rock' that is St Peter and He invested His authority in that Church and He gave His word that the gates of Hell would NEVER prevail against that Church. If you leave the See of Peter, then how can you say that you are still in that Church?

  • @GaraGambini should we prove that Protestantism is false by trotting out all the crimes of Protestants committed not only in Northern Ireland or in the American South (KKK)? I'm sure many of these men were viewed as heroes and faithful in good standing in their respective communities. That proves nothing more than that there are always hypocrites in any human institution, even the Church militant.

  • @GaraGambini i dont know, im not the DISTRICT ATTORNEY

  • PikSokolit, be a little kinder. Protestants are still brothers and sister in Christ....not the child of Lucifer. Scott Hahn here was a former Protestant and he loved God then too. He praises them for many things and was thankful for many of the things he learned back as a Protestant minister. In fact he came to know Christ through Protestantism and learned that the fullness of Christ's church is the Catholic Church. We have much in common...namely Christ himself, scripture, 2 sacraments...

  • Protestants still need to humble themselves and enter the True Church. That's the problem.

  • PikSokolit, this is not how we're going to convince our protestant brothers and sisters to come back to the fullness of truth! I hope you don't really believe and preach what you wrote.

  • Can I mirror this?

  • Good explanation. Protestants need to take a closer look and understanding towards its meaning.

  • If you want to know whether the Early Church Fathers interpreted exactly the same as what is been said by the Church

nice one aarancel good luck next TIME

  • wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church." Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrneans, 8:2 (c. A.D. 110).

    student of John the Apostle

  • @ringnebula6767 The word catholic means "Universal" and doesn't always refer to the Roman Catholic Church. Just as in the Apostles Creed, the word catholic in that means universal.

  • @jhalloran1 --"catholic" implies consistancy in doctrine, form of worship, and governing no matter what era or place you are in; non-catholic churches cannot make this claim of "consistancy".

  • Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build my Church, Wherefore where Peter is the Church is... Ambrose, Commentary on the Psalms, 40:30 (AD 395).

  • Number the priests even from that seat of Peter. And in that order of fathers see to whom succeeded: that is the rock which the proud gates of hades do not conquer. Augustine, Psalmus contro Partem Donati (A.D. 393).

  • ...the chief of the disciples...the Lord accepted him, set him up as the foundation, called him the rock and structure of the church. Aphraates, De Paenitentibus Homily 7:15 (A.D. 337

  • Peter, who is called 'the rock on which the church should be built,' who also obtained 'the keys of the kingdom of heaven...' Tertullian, On the Prescription Against the Heretics, 22 (c. A.D. 200

  • If you want to know whether the Early Church Fathers interpreted exactly the same as what is been said by the Church, read the following sermon by Saint Aurelius Augustine about Peter (Kephas) about been the "rock" (Philip Schaff, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1956), Volume VI, St. Augustin, Sermon XXVI.1-4, pp. 340-341).

  • I just read it and it's a powerful statement warning against churches without authority and false doctrines. As he says" ..is Christ divided?" It should be compulsary reading for protestants! Augustine wrote this centuries before Luther came along!

"In that one Apostle then, that is, Peter, in the order of Apostles first and chiefest, in whom the Church was figured, both sorts were to be represented, that is, both the strong and weak; because the Church doth not exist without them both."

  • ..."Peter answered, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." One for many gave the answer, Unity in many. Then said the Lord to Him, "Blessed art thou, Simon Barjonas: for flesh and blood have not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven... For before he was called Simon. Now this name of Peter was given him by the Lord and that in a figure, that he should signify the Church. For seeing that Christ is the rock (Petra), Peter is the Christian people (cont)

  • For the rock (Petra) is the original name. Therefore Peter is so called from the rock; not the rock from Peter, as Christ is not called Christ from the Christian, but the Christian from Christ. (cont)

  • "Therefore," he saith, "Thou art Peter; and upon this Rock" which thou hast confessed, upon this Rock which thou hast acknowledged, saying "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God, will I build My Church" that is upon Myself, the Son of the living God, "will I build My Church." I will build thee upon Myself, not Myself upon thee"
