To inform those who don't know about Southern Han Chinese architecture and culture... The festival in this clip is Matsu/Mazu Birthday and those claiming Hong Kong architecture; this is not the Cantonese or the Teochew style but the Hokkien (Fujian/ Minnan) style architecture with swallow tail edges.
They didn't mention the city's name but since they speak Cantonese it much be a cantonese region with a parade showing off Hokkien/Taiwanese style. Matsu is also well known by the Cantonese.
No. The architecture is clearly from Hong Kong, so is the language (Cantonese). Not Taiwan... you guys need to read more about the film before even trying to comment.
@wherewillyoube I'm not sure if you're trolling or not. :( But just for reference... "the parade sequence is based on a religious procession and a temple in Taiwan". (source: Wikipedia - director's commentary from the DVD)
I'm not sure what "language" you're referring to, but the BGM is sung in Japanese (no traces of Taiwanese or Cantonese). And for that matter, I'm fairly sure both Taiwan and HK use Traditional Chinese, although phrases may be used differently. :S
as a japanese, I have to tell the song is from japan but the parade is from Taiwan. because, Taiwan has supported japan so much after the Tsunami disaster and they have great culture.
This movie, I believe, is PAN ASIAN in term of cultural reference. this scene is from TAIWAN. Especially in the murder case scene; it took place in the THAI house, the text in the book (the Doll) is HANGUL, the painting is BALI.
Lyrics: Although the moon doesn't shine every one night, but Mue (a monster bird in legend) sings every night sadly. Even if I look back the past, The flowers (Sakura) burn off. As if the heart of consolation already disappeared In this new world Gods are gathered day broke, Nue sing The flowers (Sakura) pray to gods Although the situation in this life are tragic, cannot give up a dream. die holding animosity.

@wangttang Maybe emilee2215 misunderstood that you refered to"Taiwan" as a province of PRC. It's a hot-button issue now. I know my country is ROC, but if I claim that, many troubles will come. Foreigners don't know what's different between ROC and PRC.
@minborox never been to china, but i lived in Taiwan for a month and those temples are everywhere in taiwan. They look damn near identical to the ones in the video.
Kanashimi ni nuetori naku Aga kaerimi suredo Hana wa chirinu beshi Nagusamuru kokoro wa Kenuru ga gotoku Aratayo ni Kamu tsudoite Yo wa ake Nuetori naku Saku hana wa Kami ni koi-nomu Ikeru yo ni Aga mi kanashimo Ime wa kenu
This reminds me of the Karas OVAs. Say what you will about their plot, but I've never seen anything that could integrate 2D and #D as perfectly as they could.
I really fall in love with this scene. The drawing, the music and the atmosphere amaze me. The combination brings the mix of feelings to me that is hard to describe in words. Beautiful piece of art!!!
@Moriremtots Don't be ignorant. Just because 4 (now 6) people did not like the video, that doesn't mean that they have some sort of disability. Grow up and learn to keep an open mind.
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie - it gives my the heebiejeebies every time I watch it
I think this scene's trying to show that even though the parade's supposed to be something grand and beautiful, somehow it just looks monsterous and evil, like a perverted portraiture of how man tried to reach up with all his strength and attain goodhood, only to end in ruin.
I think the over-gaudy parade and the sullen Buddhist monk at 2:40 is supposed to show this. Does anyone know what I mean?
@s117godd man i spent already 2 hours trying to find out the city in china where this celebration was taken from as well as streets of hong kong in first part of a movie. asking my chinese friend but she cant remember either. parade in this city looks exactly like this. one of the teachers was showing to us on a lecture. will link u if i find 8 )
@s117godd and i also think the original meaning of this parade is transported into the movie. it is in addition that japanese anime was influenced a lot with chinese culture.
@wangttang after the Chinese civil war, KMT lost and fled to Taiwan. The commies, PRC, has taken over China. Still, the KMT considered themselves a true Chinese culture heritage; therefore, called themselves ROC, the republic VERSION of China, but that was 90 years ago. Taiwan has already cultivated their own culture, and definitely NOT a part of China. Learn some history before you comment.
When mentioning Taiwan's official name within Taiwan, most Taiwan say "Taiwan" directly or ROC(Taiwan). Not many Taiwanese use ROC individually now. Only very few people still like to use ROC. ROC officially includes China, Tibet, East Turkesten, Mongolia, and Formosa/Taiwan..you know? Don't you think ROC is outdated?
the government is still ROC and it is printed on my passport
I do understand that people now refer ROC as Taiwan because that is basically the only province it owns
other than Fujian. However I failed to understand why people went so aggressive when I say its a province. Like emilee2215, I don't understand what offended her
i live in California and I wouldn't be offended if people called me American
New passport is "ROC(Taiwan)". Many Taiwanese prefer "Taiwan" and most foreigners know about Taiwan only. It's not hard to understand in the future. The name Taiwan will be used completely.
Actually, Formosa has been used since 1544, while Taiwan is a much newer name, and it is started to be used after 1950s after KMT government escaped to Taiwan. It's just like KMT prefer using Menggu instead of Mongolia to show that they(Chinese) own those places.
Hey everybody! I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs heavily inspired by the music and storyline of the Ghost in the Shell series. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
I've watched this sequence hundreds of times, but still every time I feel like I freeze, I hear my heart beat only and I can take my sight elsewhere then on the screen. Am I getting older?
There's a scene in the first movie with very similar music which speaks to me even more than this one. In fact, one of the most captivating scenes in any movie I've seen. That being said, this is also astoundingly beautiful and mesmerizing!

@KronoReaper right. I would love to see a Oshii do a mecha anime with this technology at his disposale.

This scene is just... beautiful. I don't think there's a better way to describe it without sounding obsessive.

Agreed. My eyes were glued to the screen and the music made it twice as good.

h3y folks,, yes it's the kind of artwork & music that would surely win many academy awards & more IF only our move/pop culture would RESPECT anime!..
ALSO::: KAWAI recorded parts of the soundtrack in an UNDERGROUND parking lot or cave or somehing,, truly unique. i think they were SO dedicated to great music that they took ALL day singing/vocalizing/recording just to get ONE song correct for this sequence, w0ah;-)
btw:: THANX for info below re: Taiwanese Temple festival parade =][=
