A huge 'THANK YOU' for posting these. Their passion, especially Mary's, has brought tears to my eyes! Surely music sews the seeds of heaven in our lives. May Mary rest in peace. She has shared her soul with us and all we have to do is accept the gift.
Centuries ago, when I was at primary school in Innish Deemawn in County Clawer, we were taught in class a different air for this song. Would anyone from that part of the country recall it? Could I get it on CD? I have a funny feeling it would sound MAJESTIC if played on a classical violin. But only the version I learned at school. Hope someone can help. July 24, 2011.
P.S.: My Dad would be 108 years old today if he were still with us!
I've said it elsewhere;you've done a public service posting these old b&w films and the lyrics that go with the songs. their vocals were without ego and these songs are so unique and full of history, the blending of harmonies just incredible, we owe you many thanks for this wonderful dip into the past and recognition of this talent.
It has been my joy and pleasure to put up these old videos and I am happy as I have said many times that people have enjoyed them. PP&Mary's music reaches into the soul and lifts you up as few musical groups can. There is a beauty of soul in their music that is unparalleled. When you listen to them with your heart, you are brought into another realm; a realm of love and goodness.
the best harmony ever, talent like this will be a long time returning , I miss my youth, but so thankful to have grown up in this era ,I truely believe it will be a long long time before life will will be the same.
I have heard A LOT of Irish music especially Irish Rebel Songs. This one is indeed a very special song.It is very different from the The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem's rendition (all gone now, sadly).I have never heard the last verse that PP&M sing. That, believe me, is saying something.Such passion! And Mary Travers is the only Irish one.You are missed,Mary. UP THE REPUBLIC!
Til now, I'd never heard Peter, Paul & Mary's version. I must say I'm blown away by it!! Such passion and anguish they capture ... Thank you for posting this gem!!!
The story of 1798 still rings true today. People around the world are still fighting for their freedoms. Sad that the Rich White Right Wing in America has painted itself as the suffering poor.
@Marydawgs This song is about the 1798 Irish Uprising, the poor Irish against the rich English. Look up Wolfe Tone and the Irish patriots. Wolfe Tone came to America, inspired by the American uprising, and left to inspire Irishmen to rise up. Just a part of history that no one reads.
Shine on..shine on Mary up in the sky.......
