The video is the truth. Is just as hard if not harder than to play tastefully in the pocket compared to playing super choppy music. All the drummers I've encountered that understand and adhere to this HAVE the amazing chops yet only pull them out during the appropriate time. That's why they work everyday instead of trying to find a band that fits their specific narrow skillset. If you don't have an absolute hard-on for old school R&B music, it's very difficult to understand this.
@sigmaK9 With all due respect your comment show your inexperience. Having “Chops” is more than playing big fills. It take disciple to play in the pocket (Groove)...I'm not impressed with drummers that over play every four bars. I've seen Zoro play many times, the cat is amazing, when he needs to shine and play a big solo he's up there with the best...Drummers will never make money in LA, NY, or Nashville over playing....thats just my two cents....
A drummer doesn't have to be boring to stay in the pocket. But too many artists in hip-hop and R&B seem to be believe "Boring Equals Solid", which makes hip-hop and R&B very dull for rockers and metal heads.
I understand your annoyance with those who insist on playing mini-drum solos every four or five measures. It's annoying to the more experienced listener, but hip-hop and R&B suffers the OPPOSITE problem. The drums are TOO restrained and that makes it very boring.
