Only recently just heard of "Scotty Anderson" - and I thought at my advanced age I had actually pretty much heard almost all the great players. How wrong was I again!!!
I really thought Richard Smith & Tommy Emmanuel were front runners ! Now I'm not so sure......I also can't help thinking Joscho Stephan too with gypsy jazz (exceptionally talented) and there must be still unheard of talent eg. in Russia. Goes on and on..... So pleased to have 'found' Scotty....
I'm going to show my ignorance here probably, but my question to anyone is.A..is this a rehearsed performance..B..is he pulling from an arsonel of licks. and C.. is he coming up (inventing) these riffs as he goes?
Folks you are witnessing perhaps the greatest picker of the guitar in the world today. No one comes close to his execution of notes on any tune he picks. Bob is truly in awe of this pickers talent. He is great too and the two of them put on a great show. Scotty is truly underrated in today;s music world....10 stars forever great job...Keep up the great work Scotty America loves you.......10 stars
(continued) knew about. I'm not just referring to technique either. Look at Django Reinhardt. He created a whole new sub-genre of jazz called "gypsy jazz" by taking the sounds of the Gypsy bands he grew up playing with and combining them with jazz. Then there were other great guitarists like Paco de Lucia that blew my mind as well. I just needed to open up my eyes and see what else was out there because at the time I was listening to nothing but rock and blues. So glad I did.
Scotty amazes me whether playing lead or rhythm.....loads of talent. The interplay between these two is wonderful....what guitarzans should aspire to.
I love that little crazy lick that Bob does that sounds like it doesn't fit ant the people laugh when he plays it...Ive only heard him and Brad Paisley do something like that.
@270Gmoney I think what he is doing is playing double stops (2 notes at the same time) and they are only a half step apart, causing a wavy vibration effect because the pitches are so close. I could be wrong, but thats my guess
My three all time favorites guitarist are relatively unknown to the general public. Brent Mason, Danny Gatton and the best guitarist that I have ever heard in my lifetime. Scotty Anderson. Words like virtuoso and genius seem to somehow miss fully describing the totality of Scottys talent. Im just very happy that we have this medium so that we can get a small taste of his brilliance. Thanks Scotty, and keep those clips coming.
Bob Saxton performed before Scotty that day and now he is Assisting Scotty in his show. Bob is a great player and has really been around. Go to Bob's myspace page and listen to Goodbye World Goodbye.
oh man you've named some special guitar players there, and I agree with your conclusion, if there were such a thing as a world guitar player competition, you'd get very short odds on Scotty. Brilliant right off the scale.
these guys' technique is phenominal but i'm not a huge fan of their soloing "feel" and i think they underestimate the value of slow notes and solos accasionally
This is the absolute summit of guitar artistry: only a tiny handful of supreme masters have ever matched it (Gatton, Breau, maybe Atkins) and none has surpassed it. The knowledge it takes to finger-pick those incredibly complex lines with that kind of fluidity & feel is truly vast. Not for kiddies, baby!
AnnihilatingAngel, been studying all the guitar greats for 40 years. Have made many audio and video best ofs as well. I have been telling people for many years Gatton, Breau, and Scotty are the best and right behing them are Wes Montgomery, Johny Smith, Jimmy Bryant, Bola Sete, Tal Farlowe, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Joe Maphis, Chet Atkins, Mchael Hedges, and Charlie Christian, Jerry Reid, Stevie ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Hendrix, Winter, A.Lee, G. Moore, & Bonamassa.
Yes, and if the music business were run by music lovers with a sense of justice, rather than by a tribe of camel-faced desert shysters, geniuses like Scotty & Gatton would be thr superstars selling out arenas - rather than no-talent, beef jerky-faced old whores like Madonna.
agreed, it seems like a popularity contest to be rich and successful in the music business. Danny Gatton couldn't even make enough money to fix up his old farmhouse. People would tell him how great he was and he would say "ok then pay me. And Scotty to does not make that much for appearences. . Today I would like to find the people who paid Danny for gigs in his lifetime and give them some audio and video/dvd best of and see what they say now?
@ancientastronomer After listening to Frank Zappa I would put him ahead of
JH, Frank has been overlooked as a creative and unique player.
Best guitar work I have ever heard in 50yrs is Gregor Hilden on his 1959 Gibson Le Paul;if you know anyone who can produce the same sort of sweet sound please let me know.
@ancientastronomer Totally agree. I love Hendrix, but guys like Scotty Anderson, Stochelo Rosenberg, etc. are in a much higher league than Jimi. Even earlier guitarists like Django Reinhardt were far better guitar players than Jimi Hendrix.
I completely agree that Scotty Anderson/ tonnes of other people were better guitar players than Jimi. But the idea with Hendrix is that he was making an 'artistic' statement that no one had before that.
thats why he is treasured and adored, not because of his technique
if it was technique everyone was after people would only listen to joe pass and john williams play guitar!
@beautaillefer Oh, I adore Jimi's playing as well. I wasn't trying to diminish his playing in any way. He was a brilliant guitarist, and highly influential. It's just that a lot of people refuse to even entertain the notion that there were better guitarists than Hendrix. Trust me, when I was a teenager I thought nobody could touch Hendrix. However, when I started expanding my spectrum of music that I listened to, I realized that there were a LOT of great guitar players out there that I never
@ChiTown7721 what? hard to play fast on hendrixs guitars? wtf are you talkin about man, I shred the hell out of my strat all the time. tons of players play fast on strats, some fingerstyle even. I study classical guitar so I have to do fingerstyle, and really, im surprised how its coming from flatpicking. a couple months in and I can do a bit of tremolo. im trying to learn recuerdos del alhambra. different music is different, but its all guitar playing you either know what your doing or you dont
Hendrix was a bluesplayer, you can´t really compare players that belong to different genres. Scotty can play the blues well too but not up to Hendrix level.
It should alson be mentioned that it is really difficult to play fast on the guitars Hendrix used.
Jazz Jazz! This is great. I can hear the 'country roots' too. Superb soloing. Why is this duo comparitively unknown? It don't make no sense. Mark Knoplfer and Chet Atkins were great together, but either of these these guys would make them stop and think! Wow! More!
Bob Saxton is awesome too. I think his solos were more impressive "feel" wise. It was his era after all! It just swung and there were some cool holes which Scotty (the master) does not know how to leave it would seem. it must be great to be able to play like that and still manage to have fun.
Scotty is virtually unknown, like how can he be over-rated? Virtually no one on this planet can finger-pick an electric like he does. The only way he will get his due though is if he does a duet album with Tommy or some other big name. Personally I think he is great.
Overrated by whom? What is it with people who can't recognize talent and creativity for what it is. And I'd like to see what you would consider "more impressive". Could you please enlighten us with evidence of why Scotty is overrated, technique?, musicality?, creativity?...please elaborate. Or is it that you have nothing better to do than make baseless assertions on youtube comment sections? Links to the "stuff" that is "more impressive" would be quite interesting.
Definitely agree. I think he's a household name, just in certain circles. It really is a shame that he doesn't get more publicity, though. Everyone should know how great this man is.
This is the kind of stuff that got me into playing guitar. Chet must be smiling from Above. As for the post about Emmanuel not coming close....well, you're a bonehead and obviously not a player. There is no "best" in this world, just alot of gifted, awesome players like these two.
wow, i had no idea how good bob saxton was. he started talking to me at guitar center today and gave me one if his custom made thumbpicks. he's awesome :)
They're both excellent supper pickers and very few even come close. I don't like to compare because everybody has their own style but I have seen Tommy in person several times and many others including Jerry Reed, Chet to name a few and Tommy has to be the best all around player/entertainer. If you haven't seen him in person you are missing alot. I plan to see Scotty as well. I know some people that have done some gigs with him and I'm sure it would be a treat to see him live as well.
This was a show featuring two great guitar players. This is from Scotty's session. Bob played earlier. These two men have been friends for years and as you can tell thoroughly enjoy and respect each other.
This one of the two most amazing guitar performances I've witnessed. Very unassuming gentlemen. There are lots of great guitar players. There are few that reach the plateau of skill exhibited by Scotty Anderson.

i luv dis song iittttt dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing du ap du ap duap it makes no difference if its sweet or hot jst give dat rythem everythung un got ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
perhaps the Paganini of the telecaster....It must be intimidating to play with this guy....Bob is very good though.....Can anyone comment on his hot licks tape?
You mean his "red Hot guitar" tape? It is brilliant, he explains most of his tricks in a great way. Very hard to actually learn to play them uptempo to say the least but we all knew that.
it's real shame that scotty anderson probably puts on a tie and works a 9-5 shlump job, when he should be the biggest thing on earth, brent mason eat your pea pickin heart out.
Being a great player and making money in showbiz has historically been ,mostly, mutually exclusive. The exceptions to the rule draw a lot of attention, but 99% of the greatest players that I've ever heard were 'uknowns' , and most of the money the 'successful' players make is playing sessions for some hack. Taking instructions from jerk producers is where the money is.That said, I don't think there's anything Brent can't do.
99% of what I've heard Brent do has been in the service of embellishing country-pop hits: no particular technique is at issue. From what I've heard theres no reason to doubt he can achieve what he puts effort into.
Aside from that, my real point was that talent and ability have little to do with show-biz. If they did, Lenny Breau ,Tal Farlow, and a multitude of others "should be more popular/richer, whatever". It's not part of the equation. I brought Brent up as a player who has both ability and success, ie, the exception to the rule. I don't 'get' why you look at that as some kind of challenge.
there seems to be a freedom and spontaneity to Scotty's playing that just amazes...every time I listen to clips like this. So many players sound like a compendium of licks to be strug together....this guy is playing anything that pops into his head and that is a true improvisor....not many of these guys around....
Only recently just heard of "Scotty Anderson" - and I thought at my advanced age I had actually pretty much heard almost all the great players. How wrong was I again!!!

Can he play double and tripe-stops like Scotty?
