Super Mario 2 is technically Japanese in origin as it's an American localised version of "Doki Doki Panic", skinned with Mario characters. Just thought I'd join in the interesting fact sharing :)
Yeah I remember hearing that Super Mario Bros. 2 was based off of a game called "Doki Doki Panic", but that wouldn't explain why the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was called "Super Mario USA". :x
Japan already had Doki Doki Panic, as well as another game called Super Mario Brothers 2, which wasn't released in the west until the port of it was included in Super Mario All-Stars under the name "Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels". You can see why they'd call it Super Mario USA as that precise version was released in the US first, but it's the same game as DDP (not DoDonPachi haha) - NoJ obviously just decided to milk the game a little more by bringing over the version with Mario appeal
I freeze that enemy to get to the spring ball too, but it's still really inconsistent for me. I don't know if I could do a good single segment run because of that. Your way's probably better for most on a single segment run.
Remember the "Play It LOUD" campaign that Nintendo had around the release of this game? This was always one of the last games that I wanted to play "LOUD" because the music was so boring.
