@Darklight465 You can toughen him up during his personal quest by speaking to him a certain way. This affects the way he behaves later in the game at the Landsmeet, especially if you are romancing him with a non-human noble warden (ie. an elf, dwarf, or mage). I don't want to give away a ton of spoilers here, but if you Google this, there are instructions on how to "harden" him. FYI, you can also harden Leliana. Which makes her more fun.

And which most people don't do during their first playthrough, because they likely don't know about it. Which is why this song is so amusing. Because many of us had this experience.

@Darklight465 After you visit Goldanna, he will talk to you about how crappy it went. You have to say to him "Everyone looks out for themselves, Alistair. You should know that." I think most people don't choose this answer because it sounds like a horrible thing to say to someone who just found out their only living relative is a complete shrew. To finish hardening him, you have to click on him again for a follow-up conversation and reaffirm what you have said - that he should be more selfish.

@Darklight465 If you do this - you will notice some differences. Mainly that he is much more ready to be king and speaks up for himself more. If you are romancing him as an elf, mage, dwarf, etc and you make the right conversation choices you can convince a hardened Alistair to have a threesome with Isabella and to keep you on as his mistress after he becomes king. Neither of these things are possible if you don't harden him.

@Darklight465 Yes. After the encounter with Marjolaine, she will tell you that she is scared by the fact that she enjoys killing. You have to tell her "This is who you are." Then she will go back to embracing her life as a bard and tell you that she never belonged in the chantry and that she was bored there. There are actually two different choices you make during Leli's personal quest that can affect the outcome of the game (killing Marjolaine or not, and hardening Leli or not).

@MrRaphal After the scene with Goldana you have the options to say something like 'everyone is out for themselves, you should learn that' and that 'hardens him up', meaning several things, such as:

- He won't be so against marrying Anora, and will even still marry her (but he will leave the Wardens and your party) if you choose to allow Loghain to live.

- If king, He will be willing to take a mistress, meaning that even if you do not become Queen, you can still be in a relationship with him.

My first play through I was a human mage and then Alistair came to break up with me, I must've replayed the landsmeet about 4 times until I figured out I can't make him king and stay with him, no matter what I say. So reluctantly I let Anora keep her throne.

@Templar366 Hardened means he'll be more assertive (ie won't let people walk over him, he'll be stronger when making decisions).

When you meet his sister, after you leave the house it'll say something like "Everyone's looking out for themselves Alistair, you should do the same", select that and he'll be hardened.

You need to select this if you want to remain in a romantic relationship with him when he is king + you are not a noble.You'll be his mistress.
