I can always picture Dave singing along to Sonic Reducer by The Dead Boys.

The Damned have always been there inspiring a lot of groups through the decades, or as Rat once said " the decay-ds". Yes they rock whether punk or rock or both at heart - they are just Damned good, see'em live too and your estimation will just go up further.
@razielblack13 Definitely. My punk collection is huge but this ranks in the top 6 at the very least. Best intro for sure. Rat Scabies is excellent!! Only got to see them once in 1978 and D.V. jumped into the crowd. Heady days!! :)
first punk single, but the members of the damned loved the summer of love, 1967 and all that. thats the beauty of rock n roll love, peace vanian, capt. rat et al.
First punk single released ANYWHERE. Punk rock was born, stuffed and died in the UK - anyone who thinks those whiney wankers The Ramones are punk have no idea what punk is.
@DOPSIF yeah, on "The Spaghetti Incident" COVERS album. And in my opinion, the GnR version is real lame. Its original 70's punk v 80's hair metal, and punk wins hands down!
i remember buying this, and blasting it out of my bedroom window! the rest is history, but did catch them at some warehouse gig the next year...happy days, great vibe with all their music..
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop songs over and over. if your one of the 5% left who still listen to real music, thumb this up, then copy and paste it to at least 5 video's.
@MrSonofsonof Yes the Damned were fucking ace. So too were the Sex Pistols. I fail to see anything funny about the Sex Pistols. At least they didn't stick out their penis during a performance, now that would be classed as music hall comedy. Each member of the Pistols were appealing individuals. When I watch the Damned I only see David. The Pistols took Punk to another level. History would be boring without them. I love both bands.
@MrSonofsonof Haha, was saying the exact same thing thing to my dad today. He got me into the damned when I was a kid! The damned were the best punk band in my opinion! Brian James is the producer at the studio I rehearse at, which is really cool, still haven't met him yet though... hopefully I will do soon.
FUCKIN BETTER THAN GREAT,I PLAY THAT IN A PUNK COVER BAND,,.DRUMS..IT KEEPS ME FITTER THAN SWIMMING OR JOGGING OR ANYTHING.,.RAT SCABIES IS probably THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE COSMOS..LOVE THE SLIDESHOW,QueenRocker89,did you make it?.
Saw them as a young teen in 77 at a holiday camp. I was terrified. Sensible was nude lol!, Wards bass with Vanians voice together sounding like the devil knocking on the door and Scabies...god knows.....but it was of course BRILLIANT!!
I can remember as a young punk there was a group of us that always used to get the bus to Birmingham every Saturday to hang out - we always used to sing this on the bus, one would sing guitar, one would play the seats like drums and the girls did vocals....brilliant and to the annoyance of all the other non punk bus goers!

Officially the first "punk" single ever released ............... and still the best ever.
No other band ever came near this song.
I saw them at one of their first ever gigs supporting (of all bands) Graham Parker & The Rumour !!! They really pissed-off the audience with the wild stage antics & immense energy. Excellent stuff. Followed them all over London after that night.
@toolkien check out the comment i put it was supposed to be a reply to your comment but i just posted on video not as reply so go to the video and see it
Saw the Damned over 30 times, was anybody in peterbourgh around 85,when capt sensible, sat on edge of stage naked playing the pink panther tune?? when on for 45mins,till they got kicked off? QUALITY!!! tha Damned are the bollox, the best example of early 80s punk
This guy I used to talk to always made fun of me and told me I look like Dave Vanian. Hahahaha I look nothing like him, I'm just easy to mess with. :P
One of the best punk bands EVER--jesus when I bought this album in Los Angeles in '77, I took it over to my friend's house and we played it again, and again, and again--they were fantastic live too.

(check my bio)and i want all you kids to listen to the drummer on this blast-off song. if i didnt know better, and someone asked me to name the drummer playing, i would say it was Keith Moon at his finest. this song to be the 1st punk song released, is quite the accomplishment. the ramones 2me, sound more power-pop-punk...but this is Punk 2me.
What a bummer... i have just crossed all of Rome (and more) to see the band at the Black Out (!) Club... and was met witha a crappy little note on a gate saying "The Damned have called off their Italian Tour." What the hell happened, boys?!!!
I don't know why, but you can really feel a kind of energy radiating off of this song... I'm not a hippie or anything, but after all of these years, this music still feels alive like it did when it was first recorded, you just don't find songs like that too often...
@CowboyClucky sure thing...tho' I was too young at the time...they had energy ! I think British Combo THE MASONICS did a cover of this 'ere song. Check them out...they too have energy !! remember summer of 76 very hot drove the Brits on verge of insanity
@ter50 Musically, your probably right. But they were important in helping to establish the look and attitude of punk rock. And Johnny Rotten, untalented though he may seem, was important in giving people the idea of unconventional vocals

@volumex2000 yuck...that is disgusting...great that trend's gone...I seen the Belle Stars and the audience was still gobbing but it was 1981...bit retarded...
Chris Miller aka Rat Scabies-was at the same secondary school as me (Elliott, Putney London),although two years above. I never met him. Yes I do like The Damned.
God this brings back memories. My friends and I use to cruise around Chicago getting fucked up in the 80's listening to the Damned. This band will NEVER get old, even though I will.
This was the first punk record ever released. Brian James was a twat that never wrote anything better again after leaving the group.
The Damned have recorded fantastic music for many years they are one of the most talented bands ever who never sold out like some of the shite mentioned on here.
Listen to their back catalogue and come back to comment 'educated' on music a little bit more.

The Damned rule!

JokerInThePack909 1 year ago 4
@JokerInThePack909 moron gnr is not even punk it's glam rock it has nothing to do with punk
MujoAndFata 1 year ago
@MujoAndFata
hahah, funny man.
GnR is indeed not punk, you say its glam rock, i say its hard rock but thats not the point
the point is that gnr has got something to do with punk and this song.
they brought out an album of punk covers including new rose entitled the spaggethi incident.
do some checks first next time.
STimo95 1 year ago
@STimo95 Hey. Well said. GnR have nothing to do here.
