  • I forgot about this--Great!! Im alive again =:))

  • Wow . . I'm alive again thanks to this song--thanks man!

  • More than awesome! This should be the Romanian anthem!

  • The wife has new rose as a ring tone. The other day in a queue in the post office her phone rang, As she rummaged through her bag to answer it a guy behind her tapped her on the shoulder and said "Let it ring luv its the first decent ringtone ive heard" So she did and two 50+ year olds nodded their heads to the damned. Its little things like this that cheer me up in this x-factor hell we live in today...

  • @affectionatepunch your damn right mate i got dead kenerdays ringtones, i always let it ring

  • @affectionatepunch that's awesome :) Your story made me smile!!! Thanks

  • First saw them in 1977 at the Top Rank Club Sheffield "amazing gig" and "amazing times" the thing I remember most is that the band came and stood a few feet away from me and my mates so they could watch the support act .

I can always picture Dave singing along to Sonic Reducer by The Dead Boys.

34 years ago oh happy memories oh happy days & RIP Stiv

  • Off to see them tomorrow night in Brighton...they're still at the top of their game in my view!

  • The Damned have always been there inspiring a lot of groups through the decades, or as Rat once said " the decay-ds". Yes they rock whether punk or rock or both at heart - they are just Damned good, see'em live too and your estimation will just go up further.

  • Awesome song. :)

  • UK Punk at it's best?

  • @razielblack13 Definitely. My punk collection is huge but this ranks in the top 6 at the very least. Best intro for sure. Rat Scabies is excellent!! Only got to see them once in 1978 and D.V. jumped into the crowd. Heady days!! :)

  • @ellycat You are getting a thumbs up for a very nice comment! ^_^

  • @razielblack13 Sure!

  • rock 'n' roll!!

  • perfection

  • One of the best Punk Tracks of all time awesome

  • @Twizz800 Not to mrntion the 1st!

  • One of my fave intros of all time... oh yes.

  • RAT SCABIES RULES O.K.

  • i have grown alot of respect for this band

  • he's so sexy !!! XD

  • Play it Very Loud: Ok, so it stands on the shoulders of giants, but this track is as good as Rock and Roll will ever get.

  • is this song is the first song punk? THAT IS THE QUESTION !!

  • first punk single, but the members of the damned loved the summer of love, 1967 and all that. thats the beauty of rock n roll love, peace vanian, capt. rat et al.

  • thanks 7 ages of rock for introducing me to this song. I'm a metal guy at heart, but this rocks!

  • @SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 lol same mate, that intro for 7ages had me by the throat. fukkin class

  • nice "leader of the pack" reference at the beginning ;)

  • Did i see simon gallup in 1 of them pics?

  • AGH!

  • hell yeah! Dave Vanian is a genius. love the way thier music sounds. "deathless anthem of nuclear romantic angst"

    great song

  • Pure genius.

  • That fukin' rpocked!!!

  • seven ages of rock

  • RAT SCABIES KILLS 11 PEOPLE WITH HIS DRUM STICKS

  • Raped that replay button

  • First punk single released ANYWHERE. Punk rock was born, stuffed and died in the UK - anyone who thinks those whiney wankers The Ramones are punk have no idea what punk is.

  • what year was that?

  • Im confused,GNR has the same song, but like hard rock, and their version is more clearer, and intro is on bass drums

  • @DOPSIF yeah, on "The Spaghetti Incident" COVERS album. And in my opinion, the GnR version is real lame. Its original 70's punk v 80's hair metal, and punk wins hands down!

  • @TheLexyboy anything is gonna win over hair metal. put punk definitely wins overall!

  • @kodimcgovern44 too effin right!!!

  • @TheLexyboy I like both versions but this one is clearly superior.

  • i remember buying this, and blasting it out of my bedroom window! the rest is history, but did catch them at some warehouse gig the next year...happy days, great vibe with all their music..

  • the damned sounded more like a punk band than the pistols, the damned were mega fast for 1976

  • Love this slideshow. Great job. Great song. Doesn't get much better.

  • The Descendents totally ripped this riff. It's all good though. Both bands are amazing.

  • This was the first non-Ramones punk song i ever heard in 1976, very memorable.

  • maybe it was,who am i to disagree, but here`s a thing....Rat Scabies vs Tre Cool?..,its an open question to everybody...I know who wins.

  • I'm gonna get so much hate for this but Sweet Children's(AKA Green Day) first album was punk

  • @btcc11 No one cares.

  • this = punk anthem

  • great band but the irony is they all loved 60s music. love, doors, moby grape, jefferson airplane. all the bands they claimed were old farts lol

  • GHEYNESS IS THE COOL WAY

  • Great band. The Sex Pistols weren't bad, but at the end of the day they were just a music hall comedy act. The Damned were fucking ace.

Shit, I've just realised that a lot of the punk girls I knew must be post-menopausal by now. That's scary.

  • @MrSonofsonof

Yes, life is scary, buddy. Get over it.

  • @MrSonofsonof the damned were much more of a comedy act than the pistols

  • @ozzymotorhead but comedy's good. nothing's wrong with comedy. pistols > damned, but this song (and neat neat neat) are pretty hot

  • @dopomusica and smash it up

  • @MrSonofsonof lol age is a burden thats for sure

  • @MrSonofsonof Yes the Damned were fucking ace. So too were the Sex Pistols. I fail to see anything funny about the Sex Pistols. At least they didn't stick out their penis during a performance, now that would be classed as music hall comedy. Each member of the Pistols were appealing individuals. When I watch the Damned I only see David. The Pistols took Punk to another level. History would be boring without them. I love both bands.

  • @MrSonofsonof Haha, was saying the exact same thing thing to my dad today. He got me into the damned when I was a kid! The damned were the best punk band in my opinion! Brian James is the producer at the studio I rehearse at, which is really cool, still haven't met him yet though... hopefully I will do soon.

  • @MrSonofsonof i like all punk (except crappy modern pop-punk) but the Sex Pistols were basicly the first boyband

  • @sjFALCONPUNCH01

    Bollox to the "boyband" label.

How many boybands can you think of who wrote their own songs , played their own music , shook the world up and created a whole new music genre ?

    I know, cos i was there !

    You know, fook all !

  • @sjFALCONPUNCH01 i would have said that the beatles were the first boyband

  • @LetsTakeArideOut

    I thought a boyband was just a band.....with boys.......soooo....coulda been anyone ;D

  • @xXgorillazboosh11Xx That it could ;) that it could indeed

  • @MrSonofsonof BIGGEST LOAD OF BOLLOX I EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE....YOUR JUST REPEATING A QUOTE MADE BY THAT TWAT CAPTAIN SENSIBLE

  • @MrSonofsonof .. damn ... same here .. all the punk girls I knew back in the day are grandmothers .. but still have the spirit .. \,,,/

  • @MrSonofsonof

some of them still have the ruins of fine and lovely women about them

  • FUCKIN BETTER THAN GREAT,I PLAY THAT IN A PUNK COVER BAND,,.DRUMS..IT KEEPS ME FITTER THAN SWIMMING OR JOGGING OR ANYTHING.,.RAT SCABIES IS probably THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE COSMOS..LOVE THE SLIDESHOW,QueenRocker89,did you make it?.

  • FUCKIN'GREAT!!!!

  • The Damned still are a class act the last album who's paranoid is brilliant.

Sensibles a great guitarist and Vanian one of the best rock singers of all time.

New Rose is a classic and the start of grat rock legacy.

Listen to all their albums and you'll see what I mean.

  • @rockabillystu d'accord

  • @rockabillystu je commence mon site (damned à toujours ete mon groupe prefere mais j'en ai d'autre plus metalique

  • Saw them as a young teen in 77 at a holiday camp. I was terrified. Sensible was nude lol!, Wards bass with Vanians voice together sounding like the devil knocking on the door and Scabies...god knows.....but it was of course BRILLIANT!!

  • Great - captures the punk movement that went so fast with its barrage of great music!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can remember as a young punk there was a group of us that always used to get the bus to Birmingham every Saturday to hang out - we always used to sing this on the bus, one would sing guitar, one would play the seats like drums and the girls did vocals....brilliant and to the annoyance of all the other non punk bus goers!

  • The Damned have always understood that punk was just vaudeville on amphetamines..

Serious in their silliness, and silly in their seriousness.

  • the one song you can never get sick off

  • youtube is good because it lets people post videos and make money of what them

i get to listen to good music for free and the way the world is going nowadays at least this music has a place for people to listen to it

My computer was built with my dad from different parts from random businesses you never heard of i might have windows 7 but i didnt pay for it and wtf is up with the comment about tranny hookers you weirdo

  • nice video - that lovely shirtless Vanian

  • Officially the first "punk" single ever released ............... and still the best ever.

No other band ever came near this song.

I saw them at one of their first ever gigs supporting (of all bands) Graham Parker & The Rumour !!! They really pissed-off the audience with the wild stage antics & immense energy. Excellent stuff. Followed them all over London after that night.

  • ...can't stop to mess around...

  • FUCK YOU PEOPLE you all watch television your promoting bullshit media bullshit music conformity and corporations

  • @UTFRG He said coming to youtube to watch music made for mass market on a computer he bought from a corporation......

I suddenlyl have the desire to listen to hooker with a penis.....

  • @toolkien check out the comment i put it was supposed to be a reply to your comment but i just posted on video not as reply so go to the video and see it

  • oh God... that' s just amazing!

  • fuck all off you

  • Saw the Damned over 30 times, was anybody in peterbourgh around 85,when capt sensible, sat on edge of stage naked playing the pink panther tune?? when on for 45mins,till they got kicked off? QUALITY!!! tha Damned are the bollox, the best example of early 80s punk

  • "QueenRocker89 - The first punk single released in the UK."

And as much as I loved punk, nothing was ever better than this !!!

  • This guy I used to talk to always made fun of me and told me I look like Dave Vanian. Hahahaha I look nothing like him, I'm just easy to mess with. :P

  • who the fuck are guns and roses

  • Guns And Roses will never have a punk soul.

  • @eduds6 that was a random comment

  • Guns did good job man...duff is cool :)))

  • ¡ME GUSTA!!!!!

  • classsss!!!!!!!!

  • classsss!!!!!!!!

  • This track is fucking awesome! I'm new to the Damned, but man this rocks! Playing it for the 15th time in a row now. Play it fucking load indeed!

  • why are you guys talkin about the axle fag and his band

  • Nice tune!

  • WOT?

  • Play it fucking loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • God damn, Dave was hot.

  • Fab live many moons ago.........their Black Album is outta this world

  • Imma such a lucky kid being brought on Punk

  • scary how similar dave and siouxsie sioux look from this era - who copied who?

  • Dave looks like Udo Kier in "Andy Warhol´s Dracula"

  • Listen to The Phantom Chords too People.

  • I vote The Damned in the The Rock Hall of Fame. They shaped "my music"....j adore tu.

  • I LOVE this song

  • The Damned never fail to make me smile - and have done for the last 30 years! Perhaps Im just smiling because Im senile now...

  • New Rose; The Ultimate Punk Song..

  • One of the best punk bands EVER--jesus when I bought this album in Los Angeles in '77, I took it over to my friend's house and we played it again, and again, and again--they were fantastic live too.

  • @helenkrump you were a punk?

  • @Afrosamurai532 Was I a punk? yep, saw the Damned in LA a couple of times in April '77

  • @helenkrump see any american punk bands

  • @helenkrump

    They're still fantastic live!

  • @helenkrump i bet.. if u were so ontop of the scene back then, n if u tell me u say them at the whiskey, i will be incredibelllllly jealous. (check my bio)and i want all you kids to listen to the drummer on this blast-off song. if i didnt know better, and someone asked me to name the drummer playing, i would say it was Keith Moon at his finest. this song to be the 1st punk song released, is quite the accomplishment. the ramones 2me, sound more power-pop-punk...but this is Punk 2me.

  • Just fantastic...they still are!

  • What a bummer... i have just crossed all of Rome (and more) to see the band at the Black Out (!) Club... and was met witha a crappy little note on a gate saying "The Damned have called off their Italian Tour." What the hell happened, boys?!!!

  • GnR ponced this song up. This is raw energy and punk at its best.

  • Comment removed

  • what a tune.....

  • what a tune..xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • what a fcuking tune..xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • by far one of the best bands i've ever seen. also some of the nicest people i've ever met.

  • I don't know why, but you can really feel a kind of energy radiating off of this song... I'm not a hippie or anything, but after all of these years, this music still feels alive like it did when it was first recorded, you just don't find songs like that too often...

  • @CowboyClucky sure thing...tho' I was too young at the time...they had energy ! I think British Combo THE MASONICS did a cover of this 'ere song. Check them out...they too have energy !! remember summer of 76 very hot drove the Brits on verge of insanity

  • they were shit hot live , Dave Vanian and the Captain were gr8 .

  • Any one that says the pistols were better - is WRONG.

  • @citroenman maybe not but stiff little fingers is better than pistols and damned together

  • @citroenman

    Thunbs Up!

  • Why compare? Two great bands from the golden punk era. I like. Both.

  • Why compare? Two great bands from the golden punk era. I like. Both.

  • Why compare? Two great bands from the golden punk era. I like. Both.

  • @citroenman Enjoy em both this is better that is better is just crazy.

  • @citroenman UK SUBS probably suck 2 then eh.

  • @citroenman Well this band only has two good songs and most of their stuff is pop sounding so yeah im not saying i like pistols but they arent better

  • @citroenman Pistols are overrated

  • @ter50 Musically, your probably right. But they were important in helping to establish the look and attitude of punk rock. And Johnny Rotten, untalented though he may seem, was important in giving people the idea of unconventional vocals

  • @IAMOCKWORD Yes you are right but musically they were inferior to the other punk bands and without their icon Sid Vicious they wouldn't be so famous. However my favourite is The Clash, I really love their versatile music.

  • @ter50 Actually they were fairly famous when they had Glen Matlock on bass, before Sid Vicious (who, by most accounts, couldn't actually play). My favorite would have to be The Misfits. However, ''Know Your Rights'' and ''Guns of Brixton'' were great songs

  • @citroenman -except that, the pistols were better.

  • @rix66 someone that obviously wasn't there

  • @citroenman yes! bEcuase they weren't just better! They were the best!

  • @citroenman

    i dont agree with u

  • @citroenman dont agree with you at all but your opinion the damned were great but the pistols kicked ass and said much more.................

  • Still the first punk record!

  • Such a great song made even better by so many lush photos... especially 0:37!

  • Yeah baby!!!!

  • Damn this is good song

  • I clearly remember rat scabies invariably having 'gob fights' with the crowd

    oh yuck

  • @volumex2000 yuck...that is disgusting...great that trend's gone...I seen the Belle Stars and the audience was still gobbing but it was 1981...bit retarded...

  • "Made to be played Loud at Low Volume"

  • Chris Miller aka Rat Scabies-was at the same secondary school as me (Elliott, Putney London),although two years above. I never met him. Yes I do like The Damned.

  • @stylophobia did he get his A-level French????

  • God this brings back memories. My friends and I use to cruise around Chicago getting fucked up in the 80's listening to the Damned. This band will NEVER get old, even though I will.

  • off to see The Damned in about half an hour

  • Great song!!!

  • saw them live on sunday at endorse it

  • This was the first punk record ever released. Brian James was a twat that never wrote anything better again after leaving the group.

The Damned have recorded fantastic music for many years they are one of the most talented bands ever who never sold out like some of the shite mentioned on here.

Listen to their back catalogue and come back to comment 'educated' on music a little bit more.

    The Damned rule!

  • i saw these a few times way backin the late 70's n' early 80's..

    ..fuckin' hell im getting old..haha

they where fuckin' excelent at each gig

  • @DDInDaHouse187

jajajaja stuoid prick the dammed are waaaaaaaaaaaay better

  • @cucucumbia0 you call him or tried to call him stupid , but you can't even spell haha ,how stupid is that?

  • @DDInDaHouse187 HAHAHAHAH GNR look like posers compared to real punk bands like the damned!

  • @JokerInThePack909 moron gnr is not even punk it's glam rock it has nothing to do with punk

  • @MujoAndFata

    hahah, funny man.

GnR is indeed not punk, you say its glam rock, i say its hard rock but thats not the point

the point is that gnr has got something to do with punk and this song.

they brought out an album of punk covers including new rose entitled the spaggethi incident.

do some checks first next time.

  • @STimo95 Hey. Well said. GnR have nothing to do here.
