Do you know anything about comb filtering in the context of nearfield monitoring? I'm noticing some combing effects in the front-to-back stereo field of my monitors when I run a pink noise test on them, and I'm wondering how I should place the monitors and where I should sit in order to reduce or eliminate this. (My monitors are horizontally positioned with offset tweeters btw.) Awesome video, thanks for posting. Cheers
Comb filtering is when you have a stack of wide dispersion speakers close together, different frequencies can get louder-quieter-louder-quieter due to cancellation as you walk from left to right in front of the stack
@TimpBizkit Comb filtering can occur when you have two or more "fighting" signals in both an acoustic environment and inside a DAW. The very wise Jon Shirley uses the same terminology in his informative series for Recording magazine. The Compleat Recording Musician - Part 4
Understanding Digital Audio - Part 2. Check out the insightful "Latency App" at the bottom of the article to play with the effects of comb filtering in a digital envirnoment.
@joise69 Totally. Playing with phase alignment can create really cool effects. In fact, a few effects get their sound from doing just that. It's only "evil" if you're trying to get a solid, non-phasey sound. Thanks for pointing that out.
I use a comb modulator delay effect sometimes on my drums (flanger) hahaha I obviously just made that term up..
