  • Of all time: JRPGs

    Of this generation: WRPGs

    IMO

  • @chemrjames Lolz! xD

  • I mostly play WRPG's, being able to create my own character and choose my own path (Good or Evil) is always appealing, I've yet to see a JRPG that does this, they tend to stick with the goody-goody pretty boy character.

  • Neither!

    I prefer ARPGs!! =D

    Arabian Role Playing Games!! :p

But the thing is, they don't exist yet! =.="

I enjoy both, but I am inclined to favor JRPGs. =)

  • I like JRPGs more.

In WRPGs, there is of course a story, but it's just a simple story. You have a user created character, and just lvl up, doing "sidequests", rarely sticking to the game's story and everything reminds of nerdy Online games. The only good thing is the gameplay.

In JRPGs, there is a story, which is followed by the whole game. The characters have a history and are more ALIVE. There are much greater soundtracks AND environment settings and generally they are more remembered.

  • FABLE 3 RULES!

  • @patricknonstar Fable 3 sucks as hell!!

  • @Biscuitgamer Fable 2?

  • @patricknonstar Yeah, Fable 2 is a bit better. But in my opinion the Fable Series sucks. By the way, there are many gamers out there who don't accept the Fable Series as a real series of rpg's.

  • @Biscuitgamer It's more like a sim game to me.

  • Basically everyone is trying to come to the ultimate happy medium & make Deus Ex! 1 or System Shock 2 lol. 1 thing though ALL games made by Todd & bethesda have the sound effects & animation totaly wrong & archaic! the swords & guns sound like cheap slashes & the "pop" in fallout 3 sounds like pop cans or just..OFF. j-rpgs especially final fantasies may have a rock paper siccors battle system since 90's TRUE but the sound effects sound superb & dealing an attak/spell sounds 100 times better!!

  • There hasn't been a good WRPG in years :(

  • I prefer western RPGs for their choices they arent as linera and personnally I hate turn based combat that shit is just fucking gay. Plus the plots for JRPGs are all identical, The graphics arent as good as western rpgs minus cinematics to which JRPGs have more of than actual gameplay it seems like. JRPGs had thier time now gamers want more for their 60 bucks

  • @BEOWULF9965 Turn based combat requires strategy. The plots aren't identical. Japanese RPGs are meant to tell STORIES, storytelling is something that WRPGs do very very bad at. Also, have you seen Square Enix's graphics? Their cinematics is amazing and even in game play is great.

  • @zackfair73195 I said they had good cinematics but they rely more on cinematics than they do gameplay, where as a WRPG doesnt use it like a crutch as far as bad story lines have you even played any of the KOTOR games or Mass Effect games? and yes JRPGs shoe horm them selves into archeotypes all the time in fact its so painefully obvious magazines that review these games bring it up all the time even if the game gets a good score. As far as strategy cyclying thru menues before your turn isnt

  • @zackfair73195 strategy. Unlike JRPGs WRPGs are formulated to make your own story. They are akin to clay you mold the story you don't siton a straight and linear path. It takes more complex programming skill to account for all variables that gamers may encounter or caused based on their decisions in a game. JRPGs are for those with no imagination and want a cookie cutter story book game is al its not the fault of the devs

  • @BEOWULF9965 Ah, no. JRPGs are very very different. Xenogears and Suikoden II for example. Play them and you'll see very little similarities. Western RPGs "you mold the story" is untrue as well. In Western RPGs you create your own character (which is painfully long) and you can do whatever you want. I prefer video games that tell a story. You know, a GOOD one?

  • @BEOWULF9965 Also, BioWare does seem pretty reliable from what I've researched. Unlike shitty Bungie and Bethesda.

  • @zackfair73195 1: Bungie make FPS not RPGs.. Bethesda focuses on gameplay more.. and besides play morrowind. That was a good story.

  • Since most of you are Caucasians there is no point to support JRPG.

  • opps i almost forgot Fable 1. (not deeply into 2 and 3 as much...)

  • FF1-8 were the best of ff games (in my opinion).

WRPGs such as Mass Effect 2, and Fallout 3, Oblivion, and World of Warcraft are my fav rpgs of all time.

jrpgs are great and my favs are and always will be Legend of Dragoon, FF7, FF 10, Chrono, Lufia 2, and...thats it i guess....

  • JRPG

  • There hasn't been an original JRPG in years.

  • @martinthew I agree that's why japanese developers are lagging behind in world wide sales. There products are only heartily appreiciated in their country

  • Many of my all-time favourite games have been JRPGs, including the Final Fantasy series, Chrono series, Dragon Quest V, Lufia II, Alundra, etc.

On the other hand, there's only a few WRPGs that I really enjoyed, my favourites being Fable and World of Warcraft.

    So overall, I prefer JRPGs.

  • Western MMO's bug the piss out of me. I'm more of a plot kind of guy, I don't care if I can run 5 miles, I'd rather have well developed plots and stories.

  • @zackfair73195 dont play an MMO and try Bioware and Blizzards Diablo sereis is better than anything comming from the far east as of late

  • @BEOWULF9965 Not just MMO's, all Western games. Like Oblivion sucks. Diablo was decent, but had a shitty story.

  • @zackfair73195 I think you have played nothing from BioWare games

  • Also Im for Western RPGs... J-RPGs don't provide the damn freedom of choice, you can't create and PLAY A ROLE of your CHaRACTER... but watch the scripted adventure of some pre-written character...

It's not an RPG then if you cannot even make choices for this person... it's an adventure game!

  • i like western better but i like light rpgs western becouse you have more freedom as the player you can chose what you want japanese becouse thire pretty

  • wtf all people like fps! FPS! FpS! fPS!!!

    aim and shoot!

..dont have a good story like asian rpgs

  • @R3N3LL3sc

Stories in asian games? What's to give shit about there it's not like it's original in any aspect, like 90% of J-RPGs has generic Good vs Evil and saving the world story before army of evil destroys it for no particular reason... it's not a story it's a joke and insult to an imagination of healthy minded human being.

  • @R3N3LL3sc lol you make jrpg fans look like complete retards.

  • I prefer JRPGs for a myriad of reasons, but the main one is my preference for linearity. When playing a WRPG, I'm told to make my own fun. The game doesn't seem to understand that I want IT to entertain ME! I know I'm in the minority in the West nowadays and that WRPGs are still on the rise, but my stance will most likely forever stay the same.

PS: Tales and Persona are the epitome of awesome.

  • I agree with you

  • Western rpgs all the way after playing dragon age, mass effect, fallout 3 etc i could never go back to jrpgs. Playing as the spikey haired kid with big anime eyes was cool back in the late 90s but now it's just lame. Western rpgs have much more mature content. You customize your character and can choose how the story plays out through your choices. I just find that way more immersive and interactive.

  • JRPGs all the way... I despise the stuff that WRPGs try to promote, character creation, deviatable stories... what i like is customisation that is not ultimately limited, leveling, having goals to reach rather than being dumped in a world and being expected to do stuff... I find that if you're given too many choices, they become bland

  • continued:

I also I much prefer turn-based combat and random battles, something which WRPGs seem to refuse to use

  • @velocityeleven I know what you mean. contrary to popular belief, I think it's the WRPG's that are the same concept all the time, you know it's going to dump you in some random world with too many choices to make, and it has this Lord of the Rings medievil style to it unless it's a futuristic one. but JRPG's tend to explore different styles. be it turn based or action, you know what you're doing, and rather than having a remote control character, you have a character you can relate to.

  • @velocityeleven Why do you prefer turn based? RPG are for role playing, i.e. becomng immersed in your individual character, so I don't see how standing back, telling your character what to do, and passively watching hm fight is immersive at all. Its self defeating for god's sake!

  • I prefer thinking about my actions. If you've got an action game where you're running around button mashing and tming attacks then the game cant really allow for 70 different commands. Not saying action games are bad, I just tend to prefer thinking out my actions when it comes to RPGs, I dont really know what's so "passive" about it, they level up the way i make them, they attack the way i make them, I might not be actively controlling every bit ofanimation but I'm still making the decisions

  • @FrankDaTank1218

the first RPG made by western devs had turn-based combat and it's the original way to play RPG.Get your fact straight kid.

  • How come I don't see that much WRPG?

  • I like Western RPG's for their more mature subject matter, character customization, non-linearity, etc. I don't like JRPG's because of the cutesy style the turn based battles and menu based battles.

  • mostly western rpgs but haven't really played many jrpgs. okami and kingdom hearts. those were great. starting something else

  • all the rpgs i play are japanese so ^^

  • Japanese RPGs were far more superior than the Western in the 90's. Games like Xenogears and Final Fantasy VI had such an advanced story line that Western RPGs could not even compete against.

JRPGs have been linear in story but games like Saga Series offered nonlinear story mode way before the days of Dragon Age. Infact, Saga Frontier is one of the best RPGs ever made.

JRPGs can definitely learn their lessons. Star Ocean 4 was garbage! FFXIII will be garbage. We need more MATURE story line

  • I like both, but when it comes to quality western rpgs usually have to be the best of the best for me to like them. jrpgs can be mediocre and I'll usually like them. doesn't get much more on rails and average than enchanted arms and I enjoyed that game. and your sound is so low that actually be absorbing soundwaves rather than producing them. I can only hear you with all my volume controls maxed, and even then it's soft.

  • @jamminjago Thanks for letting me know. I know how to fix it so I'll adjust it for the next video I make.

  • @Shhteve I think that there are some good japanese rpgs, but i feel as if japanese rpgs are losing their touch.

I used to really like old japanese rpgs before they became interactive movies.

Now i can't really stand most of them because i don't like the style, and anime characters kind of annoy me.
