  • Why did you max the knobs on Dist+? Because the sound kind of sucked. So GTOD was better on this demo. Oh, but this wasn't a shootout.

    And @ LesterPaul01

It sucked because the knobs were maxed. You shouldn't max the output and gain, it just gives you that kind of harsh tone.

  • the distortion plus sucks.

  • What! How did you not like when they were both on!? That was the best part!

  • @TheCollisionofworlds actually alot of guitarists use an overdrive pedal to layer on their amps distortion. almost every guitarist that plays some lead live has a tube-screamer-esque pedal to boost the lead with a little OD.

  • and Tenacious D has gone electric.

  • @Zombiekeks from what I looked up Randy use the Distortion+ to get a boost in his sound. Btw I have a distortion+ and to me it sound really nice

  • Yellow pedal not only looks like a bumble bee, it sounds like one. Yechhh!

  • The yellow box is more of a fizz/fuzz sound. Almost as bad as my DS1.

  • @journeyquest1 Yeah, that's actually what Randy Rhoads used but I've never understood why :-D

  • @Zombiekeks Personally i like the Maxon OD. Runs about 150 bucks. Sounds better than any OD i have tried. I dont want my OD sounding like a fuzz pedal or distortion.

  • @journeyquest1 Yeah, I'm rather the overdrive guy as well... but to be fair, the distortion+ is obviously not supposed to sound like a warm overdrive pedal

  • @journeyquest1 no hr just never turned the overdrive on the amp off. which is the biggest mistake anybody could make when using distortion pedals. you're supposed to run the pedal through a clean channel.

  • Wrong guitar&amp setup for these 2 pedals. A Marshall plexi or JMP master volume were the amps best suited for the Distortion+ to add more thickness/girth to a dirty amp.The GT OD, which is a Tube Screamer knockoff still sounds best used in the dirty channel. Must be a post-1990s thing but I don't get the clean Fender/Vox-style amp & solid-state distortion pedal sound prevalent w/ modern guitar players. Back in the day if you had a clean amp you played Country or *disco*-no dirt pedals required.

  • wow , so nice demo, tanx dude

  • gt od vs ts9?

  • can you do more videos like this? i mean, "stacking" and combining pedals!

  • these are both true bypass right?

  • Thank you so much for these pedal demo's! saves me a bunch of gas and money! If yer ever Houston Texas drop me a line, We can boogie down on some good ole home blues! 832-413-2472!

  • For once, the Dist+ actually sounds cool. Fuzzy and nasty and awesome.

  • Mxr gt-od or Digitech bad monkey?

  • @Musicman1413 they are different. I see the bad monkey more like a tube screamer with a lot of mid range. I don't see the mxr like a tube screamer, it has a lot more bass and less mids, they are just different pedals you have to try.

Plus bad monkey costs half of the price

  • I don't think he sounds like Jack Black at all.

  • Sorry, this is a bad demo. You are using the GT-OD with distortion and tone turned all the way down, and output all the way up. This means you are using it as a signal booster only, so you are only getting the sound of the amp boosted. If you want to compare, turn down your amp so there's not distortion, and turn up the distortion on both pedals!!

  • @robritoboy @robritoboy You have a lot to learn my friend! Ye sure, if he would do it your way it would compare the pedals wave-clipping more accurately, BUT (a very big but) to get the best sound out of your gear (in my and most other musicians opinoin with a good taste and ears), you should do it gearmandude style! So this demo show the pedals at their best really!

GMD, you are an awesome living being, whatever kind of creature you might be!

  • the distortion pedal sounds a bit too generic for my taste.

  • Great demo but please get a good mic!

  • GOD SHUT UP!!!! WE KNOW HE SOUNDS LIKE JACK BLACK!!!! CHILL AND LET HIM DEMO IT!!!!

  • Is the Distortion + good for Van Halen?

  • @Gibson735150 Not particularly.

  • @Gibson735150 I bought one hoping it was and its not. Your better off with using the natural distorion from your amp.

  • Maybe nobody has mentioned but he really sounds like Jack Black

  • Jack Black? Is that you?

    Kidding.

Awesome playing! The OD sounded better to my ears.

  • gearmandude would you recommend a fulltone ocd with the distortion plus along side just so i can get more sustain tones when i play leads. Ive noticed the drive alone with my strat and the OCD is to brittle with it. What do you think

  • @varone6t9 I have both pedals(ocd, dist+) and they do not mix well together.(I have tried everything)

the best way to use the dist+ is for adding a boost to your overdriven amp.

  • dude you should quit off the amp distortion.

  • Will the mxr distortion + get the same sound as the 1974 version ?

  • Really like when theOD is pushing the dist +.

Sounds really fuzzy... wonder how it would sound with a microamp in front of it with vol maxed and dist lower (really having the Microamp pushing it)

  • i think u sound like jack black :P

  • I kinda liked it with them both on. I think it would work good for solos. or am I just an idiot?

  • what pedal do you recommend for classic rock?.more on the lines of janis, ccr,zz top

  • well ive heard randy rhoads used the distortion+

  • what should i get pls reply coz tomorrows the day!! boss distortion, mxr distortion+, mxr distortion III !!!!

  • A little late, but I would've recommended the distortion III...what did you get?

  • Considering distortion is, by definition, the destruction of tone, maybe that's what some of us are looking for;) I think it's fair to say both overdrive and distortion came to be b/c some folks wanted their tone to sound nastier, dirtier, and generally WORSE. Now we seem to have camps of what kind of bad is good while we look down our noses at other kinds. Frankly, I think the less subjective and individual music gets, the lamer it gets - and the less inspiring.

    Sorry if I'm overreacting:)

  • If you knew anything about these pedals, you'd know they have less in common with a DS-1 and more in common with a TS-9. Learn before you speak.

  • You have to ask questions in order to learn.

  • how does the distortion+ compare to the distortion 3?

  • The distortion plus is very gritty and smooth, almost like a fuzz. The distortion 3 Doesn't have as much gain, but its alot tighter and focused

  • I disagree with the gain bit

  • the distortion plus definately has more gain...the eq of the dist 3 makes it seem heavier

  • that is another vid(already made)

  • your "dry" sound coming from the amp is better. if i ever you i wouldn't use these pedals!

  • now Natinyahoo, since you ask the same thing on every mxr pedal review, these pedals ARENT the Zakk Wylde od, ok? Why dont you just BUY the Zakk pedal?? its cheaper

  • i've just bought bought the distortion plus and every time it is turned on i get uncontrolable feedback can anyone help me please

  • What other pedals are hooked up and at what levels? How close are you to the amp? Try turning down the level of the Dist + or turning off another pedal eg if you're using a tube screamer as well. PM me if any q's and I'll help you. Sounds like you're getting too much level from somewhere, but it's unlikely to be the dist +.

  • thanks man but i found out what it was

my pickup was microphonic so i just wax potted it. it sounds great now

  • DIY? Was it Tele? My pups on my Strat are a bit microphonic, but don't give me too much of a problem unless everything is waaaay boosted and loud. Takes more than just the Dist + to do that though. Glad its fixed :-)

  • it was my les pauls humbuckers and i did diy

  • I know your Jack Black! Don't lie.

  • fuck you jack black

  • shouda been GT-OD and Distortion III

  • ya, thats probably true too, it's probably a combination of things

  • its probably just the camera, but the distortion sounds pretty fizzy!

  • largley due to the nasily telecaster, he needs a les paul.

  • he has a very nice one

    good tones here

IMO Teles and Les Paul's can complement each other in a mix

  • Distortion+ beats the GT-OD's green ass with a spiked fetish paddle.

  • this guy sounds like jack black

  • REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD SHOES

  • why do you have the dist + maxed out? that kinda sux for a review don't you think?

  • I think you own every pedal ever made.

  • Hi, Gearman - If I had to choose one pedal in the world in order to replicate the Keith Richards' live tone of the latest tours, that comes from his twin, which pedal would you reccomend? I have a Tele and a Peavey Classic 30.

    Thanks!!

  • Boss makes pedals that model a fender twin and a bassman. Those should get you pretty close since he doesn't use much besides his tele and a twin amp.

  • I have that setup, you should be able to get close without pedals. Try the clean channel really cranked, you can get a Fender-e tone, with a little Vox as icing on top!

The Fulltone Fulldrive 2 would go well too.

  • Nasty buzz on the + there.

  • and oh,...can you do another demo with same pedal but swap the pedal position....i think it distortion has to come first and OD second (if using for pushing the distortin)

  • can you comment on the MXR Custom GT as a solo boost? will it add gain?

  • it does and look at the pro guitar demo

  • so would the gt-od be comparable to the ibanez tube screamer? they both sound great. i'm considering buying the +.
