All I have to say is that the Shinning wouldn't be half as good if it didn't have Penderecki's music in it. Srsly, when this songs kicks in during the part when poor Wendy is seeing all the freaky shit, it just adds so much to the scene.
It's great, but how could anybody create such evil, satanic sounding music, what with the frightening chanting and singing going on? I mean I've seen the Shining quite a few times, but what the fuck? I mean the song sounds like some demonic black mass where they mutilate people. Krzysztof must've been crazy, and I'm a little nuts myself but even this music scares me!
Frankly, I find Penderecki no weirder than his follower Zappa. Actually, I find neither very weird. Well, there is nothing strange in wanting more in life than french fries and a hamburger.
Kubrick was a genius and it extended beyond his work behind the camera. His use of music to highlight and/or underscore his films was brilliant. In A Clockwork Orange it was Beethoven's 9th and Ligeti's Lux Aeterna and Strausss Also Sprach Zarathustra in 2001: A Space Odyssey; however, nowhere is music used more efficiently than in The Shining, with Ligeti, Penderecki, Bartok and Carlos/Elkind adding immeasurable amounts of terror and tension.
@TheR3volutionary Actually, Kubrick was originally planning on using a complete score by Carlos/Elkind; however, he later changed his mind and used both the aformentioned composers along wtih Ligeti, Penderecki and Bartok. "Rocky Mountains" and "Psychic Shout #237" are two examples of Carlos/Elkind's work that was included in the film.
Hello, i want to listen that but i think this video have a sound problems, i try in others computer and is always the same thing.....you listen well this?
мое личное мнение... так как я воспитан на классике.... и никак не могу воспринимать такое!!!!!уф... и вообще... это было ушасно... с какого времени шум у нас стал музыкой!!!!
your ignorant and need to open your mind more to other forms of music. This is Avante- garde and actually is written quite well. you couldn't write this.
I wonder what Stephen King thought of this music. i know he didn't care much for Kubrick's version overall, but what of the music. You think it would've even fit the noval version? I think i'd fir perfectly. In fact they should use the music as background noise for those audio books og "The Shining". That'd be awsome, Imagine that!
I'll be honest; I really love avant-garde music (especially the early Penderecki), but I relish even more whenever any musically conservative person cringes listening to it.
I would love to tie a particular musically conservative "friend" of mine (or rather my adversary) to a chair and have that person listen to a point that person finds this kind of music highly appreciative.
One of the greatest songs in "The Shining"...& the scariest. One you don't wanna listen to with the lights off... XD But brilliant, all the same; kudos to the great Penderecki for composing this & all his other creations! ^_^
The sounds may appear too avant-gardish but they're actually based on Eastern European tradition. For example the terrifying introductory percussion sounds (simantra) can still be heard in Mount Athos (Greek orthodox monastic community) during Easter service and of course in many other communities throughout Eastern Europe.
What the chorus is singing is Matthew 28,1-6. The verses are overlapping but after the first clapper sound verse 1 begins, after the second, verse 2, after the third, verse 4. Interesting how Kubrick chose those religious texts (probably accidentally) - in "2001" the black monolith is accompanied by the chorus singing "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison" and the moonbus by "Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum".
Dicen que es muy buen compositor. Pero estoy de acuerdo contigo... No me gusta.... esta "musica"... tendrá matices y sentimientos variados... pero yo lo siento mas como ruido...
No discuto, expreso. Si a ti esta musica te trasmite algo especial o simplemente te gusta no hace falta que me llames ignorante por no sentir lo mismo que tu, yo prefiero otra pieza mas tradicional.

@wolfgang731 I believe Carlos and Elkind were rejected in favour of classical music when it came to the Shining.
