Writing an college study on Kissinger's involvement in Vietnam - this is a wonderful window into the past and this provides brilliant insight into how Kissinger mind ticked and probably still ticks. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for restoring peace to Vietnam along with his North Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Tho, but Tho turned down the award stating that peace had not been restored to Vietnam. It was a sad situation and still is. A black chapter for everyone, not just the US.

india wanted to take back POK or azad kashmir in dec 1971. but USA pressured russia then USSR to act on india otherwise detente would be end. and USA sent the 7th fleet into the bay of bengal, a strong message to india to stop in bangladesh and no more spreading the war into west pakistan.

india complied. indira gandhi wanted to take back azad kashmir ie POK to to redeem the name of her father nehru.

the main aim of india was POK. bangladesh was just a side show for india..

And do you seriously think that arch rival USSR would even listen to what the USA has to say. USSR would have been more than happy if India occupied half of Pakistan. An ally in their area of interest(because of natural resources) would be nothing better than cherry on the icing.

India needs to clean up its corrupt society, its less than honest leaders and the injustices it commits against its own people. Yes ... Pakistan is a bad country, certainly no friend of the U.S. But, India was an ally of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. So, India sows the seeds of its own discord. And, it has major strides to take if it wants to be taken seriously.

thanks for posting this. fascinating piece of history. Can't help noticing the irony in all of this. Nixon calls Indians occupiers, saying they are never going to get out. Distinct parallels to what is happening in iraq and afghanistan today. The U.S finds itself in the same sort of position today.

In the context of people's struggle for Bangladesh (separated from US friend Pakistan by a galactic distance by India) Kissinger might have seen a potential to show his war mania. @MarjorieBakre - i think it's more that as an advisor he gets misused. it's hard to explain, but i know what it's lile myself to be in no way in favor the military-industrial-complex etc but to become involved in it, usually due to extreme circumstances that threaten you in some way. ethically no it's better not to advise for war etc purposes, but in terms of what he tells them - it might be better to see it from a strategic point of view, ie not that it's agreed as being a good thing.
