When I first played this, I didn't even know about the alternate endings, because in my version, Bartz was the one who didn't make it back, and the whole ending seemed quite appropriate with the main character being the only one who doesn't survive.

That was the exact opposite of how my first run-thru finished. All 3 girls survived the fight but Bartz didn't.

I actually thought this was the only ending as it made perfect sense that the main character was the one to have a "special" destiny or something, heh.

In IX you can get 2 endings, one is the normal one, and the other adds an extra scene if you bring an item.

What? IX had multiple endings? I'm quite sure that it only has one Ending, but on the other hand, i never finished it myself since my Disc 4 is broken. It has a Bonus Scene after the Credits (?) when you have the Hammer in your inventory.

just think about games like FFIX, no matter what the chars are gonna come back and it'll be a happy ending...tidus eventually comes back (in the sequel, cloud escapes the lifestream, squall and rinoa are together in the end... it's just the way it goes.

Final Fantasy is all about the happy endings. Bittersweet ones are much more rare... though they do occur; FFXII was fairly dark in comparison to the rest of the series, considering that the bad guys have motives that you would expect the GOOD GUYS to have. And they lose.
