Um I am speachless, I think its funny the giant thing flying around like a wrecking ball, and all the smoke it puts out. but I read in a book called churches by judith depree that it was to mask the smell of the pilgrims that would come as it is a very old shrine in spain they mentioned it was large but that thing is a giant pot. beautiful but over the top.
Sure, this is over the top, but what a show! I am sure that it has escalated over the years to the daring activity it is today. How'd you like to be on the receiving end if the rope from the ceiling ever breaks?
DUDE. I think I had heard about this. I'm sometimes thurifer at my cathedral and would be WAY too chicken to do something like this. Those monks are BADASS.
Of course God paraded around in the desert with Isreal as a pillar of fire at night and a column of smoke in the day to lead them. Perhaps the tradition is a bit older than masking stinky life forms.
I have just returned from Santiago which is a beautiful city. I was sorry I missed this spectacular sight so I am delighted to be able to see it here. Thank you for posting this as I know its an event that doesnt happen too often
I want one for my parish.... take that, incense haters!

That actually happened at least once and the botafumeiro crossed across a window reaching a near plaza.

Very nice capture of the event... almost like being there. Being there: a most wonderful experience... well done.

I wonder, how does one exercise to catch the botafumeiro properly at the very end? It must be difficult, it must be hot indeed.
A pity we can't feel the incense throught the Internet. I like it sooooo.

I lovew it when the guy spins when he catches it.

¡Una visión hermosa y una manera verdaderamente emocionante, artística y, por qué no, humorística y amorosa, de perfumar la Casa de Dios!

the reason it is used is a part of tradition. when the cathedral was first built, it housed monks, the faithful and animals.
the incense was used to mute the smell of all!
today, it is a ritual continued and held in very high esteem by all......
giving meaning to the words of the psalm:
let my prayer rise like incense before you Lord

I was there last week with a group and saw the botafumiero at ground level but, flying through the air? unbelievable!!!

I've never seen incense burners being swung around a church like that before. It seems a bit to much don't ya think.

Pilipino ba ang kumuha ng video na 'to? I'm hearing indistinct Tagalog words. Hehehehe! Go Pinoy!

Happy New Year to you! You're right, pilipino ang kumuha ng video. There were actually seven pinoy priests who concelebrated at this Mass last 2005.
