@TinnInches The fly at different altitudes and the varying winds take them in slightly different directions. They also land at all different times, not at the same time.

So in 20 years, 43 accidents. Hmm. I guess that's about 2 per year. I have been in Albuquerque for 32 years, and 32 Balloon Fiestas. I wish I could get statistics for those years because there were some horrific accidents in the 80's. Give me stats not bad English,

Based on NTSB reports, there have been 341 balloon accidents in the United States from 1990 through November 2009 (20 years). Of those accidents, 43 have been at Balloon Fiesta. Of the Balloon Fiesta accidents, five of them involved pilots with less than 100 hours. Eight of them involved pilots with more than 1,000 hours.

Yes! Just about every year there is some accident. Many have involved fatalities. Statistically, ballooning is not a safe sport!

@RT66TBIRD half of what you said is true. But my parents fly them and I am studying to get my license for them. True there are several accidents a year but its just as safe as go to the store and get shot in a stick up. They happen but its a rare thing so don't tell people that its that bad when its not.

@hydrobot2003 yes they do happen but you shouldn't listen to RT66RBIRD up there who just says statistically my parents fly them and the only accidents that ever truly happen is because of weather or because the pilot's was not being smart that day to make a good judgment call and if it is something wrong with the balloon it should have been found and been fixed before they had left the assigned area.

It only reached over one thousand and eleven balloons in 2000 . . .I was there. They are limited to, I think, at least 800 balloons. Even though there's a cap on the number of balloons now, it's still the largest balloon festival in the world.
