@gnukev The original verses are "Bananeira não sei/ Bananeira sei lá/ A Bananeira sei não", both 'não sei', 'sei lá' and 'sei não' are variations of 'I don't know' in Brazilian Portuguese. Like, e.g., 'não sei' = 'I don't know'; 'sei lá' = 'dunno'; 'sei não' = 'dono'. Bebel changes 'sei lá' ('dunno') for 'será' ('it'll be'). 'Bananeira' can be the banana tree or the posture of standing upside-down with hands on the ground and feet up, that we call 'plantar bananeira', 'to plant banana tree'. ;)
@gnukev Literally they're something like 'não sei' - 'I don't know', 'sei lá' - 'I don't have a clue', 'sei não' - 'I know not', both shorts for 'I don't know'. In English it would be something like 'don't know', 'dunno/dono', 'know not'. Bebel changes 'sei lá' for 'será' (short for 'it will be', 'it'll be'). A language full of possibilities, you see? Hehe. Hope it clarified.
I saw Bebel Gilberto in concert once. Right during the middle of a song she runs off stage for like 5 seconds. Then she comes back on without losing her part in the song. I wonder what she had to do backstage that took 5 seconds.
I absolutely love her music! Every song I listen to gets better and better. I have no idea what she is saying, but I am falling in love with Brazilian music. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
Bebel Gilberto representa a nossa boa e velha Bossa nova com uma roupagem que eo simbolo do Brasil internacionalmente reconhecido isso sim e musica que da gosto de escutar por horas e horas...Obrigado por vc interpretar a nossa musica com dignidade e competencia....
The translation is: Banana tree, I don't know; Banana tree, maybe; Banana tree, I don't know; the way to see it; Banana tree, I don't know; Banana tree, maybe; Banana tree, it's up to you. Maybe deep in the backyard; the backyard of your stare; the stare from the heart . . .
Bebel, filha de João Gilberto e sobrinha do Chico Buarque!

Banana Tree, I don't know.
Banana Tree, could it be?
Banana Tree, no clue.
It's your point of view.
Banana tree, I don't know.
Banana tree, could it be?
Banana tree, no clue.
That's up to you.

I'm trying to learn this song and there seems to be slight confusion in the lyrics between different versions:
Bebel sings:
"Bananeira não sei
Bananeira será...)
But João Donato and Gilberto Gil (the composers) sing:
"Bananeira, não sei
Bananeira, sei lá..."
So I'm wondering what the correct words really are (será or sei lá).
I think one version would be in future tense and the other means "I know that".
Does anyone know?

@gnukev keep with the composers compositions "sei lá" in colloquial language "sei lá" means the same as "não sei"

Bebel Gilberto,
gostei do tom da sua voz,
seu timbre de voz é comum...
gosto das suas musicas...
... eu não me canso de ouvir...
é melhor ser alegre do que triste
alegria é uma coisa boa que existe.
quero deixar um cheiro...
... Bebel, seu sorriso é lindo.

Something like this:
Banana tree, I don't know.
Banana tree, will it be?
Banana tree, I don't know.
Banana tree, could be...
Banana tree, ????? (not sure...)

The translation is: Banana tree, I don't know; Banana tree, maybe; Banana tree, I don't know; the way to see it; Banana tree, I don't know; Banana tree, maybe; Banana tree, it's up to you. Maybe deep in the backyard; the backyard of your stare; the stare from the heart . . .
mardrow 3 years ago
Not really "stare". It is hard to translate this word "olhar" but it is closer to "view" than "stare".
