If he hit 100% of the notes, the fire on the guitarist's hands would stay there for the entire song. It's easy to alter the displays to make it appear that he has a X4 multiplier even after he misses notes. Video editing software makes it easy. But it's a little harder to edit a moving object like say... a guitarist whose fire keeps going out because he's missing notes. Hope that makes sense.
