America, a country where people just plain don't learn foreign languages. It's a joke. They are so deeply into themselves that the rest of the world's languages and cultures are nothing more than an oddity to them that they can joke about. Only a small minority of Americans break this mold.
@Iceland1944 I'm proud to be one of this minority. Because of this . . . I can pronounce Eyjafjallajökull fairly passably . . . after getting help on here from Icelanders
Not even close. The "Ey"-part sonds similar to english "hEY", the "ja"-part sounds like "YA", fjall sounds like "FYATL", the "a" sounds like "AH", "jö" sounds like "YUH", kull sounds like "KUHTL". So it's EY-ya-fya-tlah-yuh-kutl. I'm Icelandic, btw.
HAHAHAHA ... People that don't speak icelandic think this is funny so imagine how funny this is to people in Iceland, for example me! This is HILARIOUS!!!
mam i am Dr Thomas Sanders....and i am sad to say,..your daughter has Eyjafjallajökull. she aint gonna make it................(mom) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
And they are still pronouncing it wrong, its not eye its a long A sound, lay the "ey"in they, and thats the name of the Glacier not the volcano, Jökull means Glacier in Icelandic.
Eyjafjallajokull means i just jizzed all over the earth in the Ancient language the natives spoke , i know this language because i did some extensive research on it a while back....................jk
Maby im not writing great english, but i speak Swedish Danish and Icelandic. Norwiagian is writing as danish nearly but say the words with a dialekt more than Icelandic. The Icelandic launguage have words as they have in Danish and Norweigan. But it is Danish and Norweigan that have changes. You understand my english and thats the most important. Maby i dont whrite right. But this american speaker hahaha its so far from northern european and icelandic. Its easy to say.
Icelandic is one af the oldest launguages in the world, the Norwigian and the Danes speak same launguage for many years since. But the Icelanders speak same launguage as the vikings for years ago. Icelandic is a old scandinavian lauanguage most Northern european people was speaking Oldnordisk its called. They dont put other soundly launguages in there launguage. They always find a Icelandic word for new words. They do not put in english or german words in they launguage, that cool.
If you say Fjuel with american dialekt, and leave the F then you have to say juel. And put on the K and it still have to sound at an american way. Say Kjull, then an american nearly can say it. Its not like american yogurt hahaha. The speaker can NOT say this name and its so far away.
If you can germany you can say Kjöll with american dialekt. Danish Köll. But the american luanguage is so far from rest of europe russia and rest of the world.
she still is pronunciation it wrong. but hey it is a pretty hard word to pronounce. I'm not gonna expect people to know how to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull. ...at least pronounce our capital city right. i've heard "ray-kuh-ja-vic" so many times. it's "reck-yah-veek"!!
@Chrisindapurplehouse The icelandic "ll" sound is approximately pronounced like a "tl" sound in English. That's why "fjalla" is pronounced "fyatla". So at the end it should be approximated as "yokutl". It is helpful to note that the "l" is quite raspy and almost sounds like someone sucking their spit. Hoped that helped you.

It's not surprising they can't say it right.
What gets me is that they call it ICELAND VOLCANO,
as if it's the only volcano in the country.
You wouldn't say AMERICA VOLCANO would you?
All they had to do is add 2 letters, and maybe even a "the" or "an"
ICELANDIC VOLCANO. Seriously.
Also, be aware that Icelanders love laughing at these pronounciations. *snicker*
