  • Hey Great Idea. Im really stoked to see this is happening. I've done testes myself and have found the booms to be successful at absorbing the oil. However they should be tied together and attached to flotation devices to insure there success. They also seem to work better in calm water and even on shore. Def not to be pulled behind boats as they are still somewhat fragile. Unless maybe in burlap sacks.

  • the reason we are not useing the hairbooms is b/c when they tried the small testing here in florida were i lived and seen with my own eyes, that when the hair is left in the water for more then an hour the hair gets heavy and sinks, so now the big problem is people are doing this and its dragging oil to the bottom of the sea, and when they tried dragging the hair with a boat it just dispersed the oil in clumps and didnt collect any oil, so there for it only works in containers like this one lol

  • I know some people who would like to donate their hair, but no one seems to know where to send it. Can anyone tell me where they can send the hair?

  • Fascinating! It would be more so if technology were looked at to recycle that Oil.

A Landfill is not the answer anymore.

Kudos to a Great Demonstration! :-)

  • Excellent idea & it would create more jobs from hairdressers, to farmers, and boom builders, many more jobs.

  • b.p. wont let you go out in the water unless you are a contract employee for the boom/dispersal op.

you are subject to arrest by the u.s. coast guard!

    isnt this a great country?

  • We were just talking about why they dont use more stuff like this and maybe bird feathers?? great vid

  • This is cool!! I believe it will work very well.

  • Gr8 vid! Sounds like Great Clips and Supercuts need to be doing their own part to assist by donating the obvious.. Then we can have our Heath Boards and EPA come in with some contraDICKtory regulation about it being a health hazard.. Just a thought following a thought..

  • So.....how much hair to clean up some untold million gallons of oil???

  • Hopefully, if we defeat all Republicans in upcoming elections and their dumbass agendas (which usually include off-shore drilling) we won't need hair booms in the future. We can probably grow enough corn and other organic matter to run on bio-fuels alone. Isn't it funny how many GM and Chrysler vehicles you see with the "Flex Fuel" logo on the back of the car, yet you don't see one goddamn Ethanol filling station?

  • @gman2000 There is no feasible way to grow enough corn to sustain that kind of fuel consumption and the food supply. We definitely should try and find alternative fuels, but ethanol is not the answer.

  • @ericblr: Have you ever driven across the United States? Have you seen the thousands and thousands of acres for cheap in places like Missouri? and Kansas? Wyoming? Your going to tell me we can't grow enough because the soil can't support it? Or we can't put down enough windmills in these areas? Or solar panel fields? Continuing to depend on fossil fuels and drill and say it's all we have is a bullshit excuse to keep lining the pockets of ppl like BP's CEO. Remember, it's only one Earth.

  • Kind of ironic, without oil you wouldn't have the nylons or the plastic mesh to make the booms.

  • Thank you so much.....passing it around to all my hairdressing friends!

  • Must stop the use of dispersant at sea to dilute the oil, chemicals are polluting less than the oil itself, but small droplets can never be cleaned and you will have to wait decades to degrade naturally, the "advantage" of oil raw is that you can mechanically filter it more easily, inclusive if absorbed by the hair so specifically collected to be removed as soon as the oil rises to the surface. Better a nation of bald hair, rather than sick and miserable.

  • make a hair NET and suspend it between 2 trawlers and drag a specified area. When it is full, give it to BP and have them wring it out on one of their waiting ships and return the NET to the trawlers along with reimbursement for the oil collected and pay for the hours of work involved.

  • I totally support what you're doing, but dude. A sweater vest? It's distracting from your message. And take out the ear "buds". This is a serious presentation about a serious matter and you're acting like it doesn't matter who's presenting.

  • If you watched the whole video you would see that this is not different from the ottimat... as they are partners. Don't jump to conclutions. We concluded that BP knew what they hell they were talking about when they created this mess, along with the rest of the oil industry. Sometimes the best thing to clean up a manmade disaster is not a manmade solution but a natural one.

  • That is what I saw on their site, there does not seem to be a clear explanation of how to dispose of the oil besides this. Just like the chemical dispersants in the Gulf are breaking up oil for bacteria to break it down naturally. The chemicals are not actually getting rid of the oil, it is aiding natural decompisition. These chemicals are highly toxic and may just be doing more harm.

  • "Worm Poop - After hair soaks up the oil, it can be mixed 9:1 with greenwaste, composted over 2 years, and fed to worms! The bacteria in the compost and worm tummies break down the oil and the worms create a fantastic fertilizer!"

  • Awesome :D

  • Is this an EPA approved product? you just can't use anything out there to clean an oil spill.

a petroluem contaminated beach is toxic...can volunteers just go and clean a beach? don't you need to be trained or something?

What do you do with the sausages when they are used? burning them is also bad for the environment.

How are these different than the other hair mats "Ottimat" that are also on you tube?

  • I only heard about this just today. This is amazing. Why aren't more people collecting hair/fur to make these booms.

  • The only thing I can say is wow....Wished we could force BP in to at least give it a try....Couldn't hurt...

  • Nice Video, but you should add salt to the water demos to make it more realistic. The ocean isn't tap water.

  • Wow is right!

  • WOW!!!

  • WOW!!!

  • Try using hay in your booms.

  • Hay and straw do the same thing for soaking up oil.

This is a cheap, quick and looks like an amazingly easy way to clean up the spilled oil. It float's Google. solutionoil Top video

  • @TheUSVET

Hay is cool however hay has many other uses.

Human hair once its cut has very few applications so we want to keep it OUT of the waste stream.

  • @matteroftrust

I see you Hair Boom sinking in the water. Can you add something to keep it floating?

  • @TheUSVET packing peanuts were added in the original patent for bouyancy. how is this different than a ottimat?

  • @matteroftrust i need help i am doing a project and how do u dispos of it plz respond

  • Please post on this site the warehouse addresses to send the animal/ human hair! I didn't get my email with the address!! I am a fan of Matter of Trust on Facebook & posted this for all there to see. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada area. Let's do our part, America!!!!! :) JennyO

  • @JennyO63

we are trying to coordinate how much hair goes to each warehouse according to their capacities and whereabouts

People need to sign up to then get an accurate address

  • Food for thought...I work with special needs kids & we teach them Functional Living Skills. This includes preparing for work buy having them do free work for local companies. Some of that work we take back to the schools and have the kids do there. I could easily see many students being capable of boxing hair or even making hair booms. These guys just love to be helpful. Just another valuable volunteer resource that surrounds you. :)

Thank you for continuing to choose to be the right choice

  • thank you too

    great idea
