Sorry, LoRau, but "Pallido il Sole" was Senesino's aria, not Farinelli's, in "Artaserse", although it did later become one of the arias that Farinelli had to sing nightly for nine years to the mentally disturbed King Filippo V of Spain.
I have now translated your message. Of course Hasse (and others - it was a pasticcio) composed the music. "Pallido il Sole" was sung by Senesino (an alto castrato) in the character of Artabano. Farinelli (a soprano castrato) sang the character of Arbace.
One of the greatest of Scholl's recorded arias. Pity that the sound quality is not up to par. Not the uploader's fault; I was really disappointed when I heard the CD for the first time...
This is a magnificent rendition of this aria. Hasse was a genious and Scholl is brilliant! I love when he gets his voice down at 3:25. Technically is perfect!
I can confirm that Hasse really was one of the greatest composers in the history of the music. Probably only Handel was greater. I really can not understand why classic labels, conductors and theatre managers do not perfom his music more often. This is really incredible. GREAT GREAT HASSE!!!!
Heaven forbid that anyone new and better should be added to the great, iron clad canon of western music. Actually during their life times Hasse WAS better than Handel. Only the richest courts could afford him. It also helped that his wife was one of the best singers in Europe. I mean, the guy had Farinelli AND Senesino on stage at the same time! That's a pretty big deal given virtuoso culture around singers back then.
Any discerning listener can understand why Hasse was so popular in his day. As for Scholl, it mysitfies me how any countertenor can sing with such tone, purity, strength, agility, and consistency. I request that anyone succeeding in building a time machine in order to hear Farinelli and other great castrati please take me along.
When I listen to Hasse, I think of these castrati and sopranos trying to outdo each other, aria by aria. One of them will come on and deliver a perfect routine, and then the others will lose confidence, flub their lines, etc.
There's a competitive element to it. That's what keeps the tension going. But opera singers today are too polite to get into that. I wish I had a time machine to the days of Bordoni and Farinelli.
This is my favorite selection from his Heroes recital disc. What annoys me is that the the recording is rather low-volume. You really have to crank it up to appreciate it!
Splendid performance and remarkable voice of Andreas Scholl

Soory, broschette, aber genau historisch gesehen, ist diese Arie weder von Farinelli, noch von Senesino, sondern von Johann Adolph Hasse. :)))))

Artaserse ( 1730 ) Aria d'Artabano, Johann Adolph Hasse.
"Pallido il sole"
Pallido il sole, torbido il cielo,
pena minaccia, (morte prepara) [2]
tutto mi spira rimorso e orror.
tutto mi spira (rimorso e orror) [2]
tutto mi spira rimorso e orror.
Timor mi cinge di freddo gelo,
dolor mi rende la vita amara,
io stesso fremo [3] contro il mio cor. [2]

Ce morceau montre ce que devait être Farinelli ! Ou alors, c'est encore mieux ! Vive Andreas : le meilleur contre-alto du moment.
