It look Like "DIE" because the letters are structured like a parallelogram. the parallelogram shape forces the "C" in DIC to look like an E as you say (Although I've never seen this in my youth).
If you look closely at the "C" (or "E") you can see that it does not connect like an "E"
Look at the DiC Inspector Gadget custom logo. The "C" there is more clear.
This freaks me out a bit. Just the music and the popping up of the logo... gives me goosebumps.
