I saw that movie and it was awful - I wanted to jump into the screen and throttle that woman, the father and all the adults who didn't come to that child's aid. I was too livid to cry. If I remember correctly, it is one of her step-sisters that goes to her at the end. A couple of the step-siblings did try to help her in little ways like sneaking her food, but they were also terrified of their mother.

Do not judge the children. It was a different age then, a different world.
