The former would indicate an act of monumental stupidity, the latter would be much sadder. I saw a guy killed by a train in California when I was a kid. A couple of drunks tried to jump on a slow moving train, just like in the movies. One guy didn't make it. He fell between the cars and it cut him to pieces. His head rolled down the sidewalk and into the bushes. His arms and legs were chopped right off. His torso was laying there with absolutely no skin on it, like a hunk of ground round. Bits of skin, hair and broken teeth were everywhere. We swept them all into the trash.

Many people misjudge how fast a train is coming down the track and the fact that the train CANNOT break to really slow down before getting to the point where they are crossing. Also, they misjudge how far out over the track that the sides of the train extend. A high school boy in our town was hit & killed at night & the Sheriff explained these points on the news. The boy jumped back from the track but was struck in the head.
