How I miss the beauty of the marriage that my beloved mother and father had together. It was so pure, so true. I have modeled all of my relationships upon the fortune of seeing how a marriage between husband and wife should be and I will forever long for that. How did they do it? I say, without both people wanting that depth, there can be know bond.
So beautiful but so heartbreaking. When I listen and cry to this song, I think of my grandparents too. My grandma passed away 12 years ago two days before Christmas. Today my grandpa is in Hospice. Having survived from a tremendous stroke, heart problems and a broken heart, he has recently told my family he wants to let go. He misses his beloved wife and wants to be with her so much. This Christmas might be the very last time I see him. I am going to miss him so much. I love you papa <3
I hear this song and I want to that wife, that "beloved wife", as my grandmother and mother were. I don't know about race, hell, I don't care, because love has no color, no race, no prejudice, it just...is. I want it as it is expressed here, as my parents and grandparents have shown me it could be. At 42, I've nearly given up, but, this song says it can be. Thanks, Natalie.

"Oh I, can't believe, I've lost the very best of me" I can't help but cry thinking about my grandparents when I hear this song. 57 years married when my Grandmother died and my Grandfather was lost without here. Such a great love, I miss them both very much and hope that they are happy again together.
pygo1212's nasty racist comments aside, this song is one of the most beautiful Natalie Merchant songs and never fails to move me. The lyrics are so heartfelt and she sings them so amazingly, as she does with all her songs. She's one of the very best female singer songwriters of the past few decades.
@pygo1212 People like you really need to stop being so pathetic and making such lame comments. If you don't like Natalie Merchant's music and you don't like this video, why don't you go elsewhere and find something that does appeal to you? Good music, such as Natalie's, has nothing whatsoever to do with racism so I don't know why people like you seem to manage somehow to twist things around to try to make out that it does.
This is the song that popped in my head when I saw the picture of Reg Traviss after Amy Winehouse's unfortunate death. The look on his face was the true look of lost love. Only us who have felt it...REALLY felt it and had it taken away can understand that look. I love this song. Thank you for posting.
This song makes me cry. What a great thing is to be loved. What a great thing is to be married to someone that loves you and cares for you and your time in this place, a companion in this journey, a whitness of our days, a partner, thru good and bad days, for the future and the memories, how sad when time does it's thing and breakes what was meant to be one for ever into a pieces of a puzzle that's lost meaning. I'm nothing without her, thanks for the upload.
This video is so touching and amazingly true in my Mother and Dads case. My beloved Mom passed away 4 years before my Dad after being married 52 years. He did not know what to do without her after she passed..it was truly so sad..Now they are both together in Heaven and I know they are happy again..one day I will join them..until then may they rest ever so peacefully... <3
Looks and sounds like my mum and dad. But my Dad went first and she's still here at 87. We figure he's hanging around in the ether waiting for her. He never went anywhere without her.
This is a song from the album "Tigerlily". Natalie Merchant.
It says it all to me. How you can miss someone. To lose a loved one be it a parent or a friend, it hurts. To lose a husband/wifef after so many years is the cruellest of all.
This song says it to me with words I can't express. It's beautiful.
Our hearts beat but there is always someone who makes them beat for us....
I'll never forget when and how I met Natalie Merchant. I was renovating a Lee's Famous Recipe chicken joint that had been abandoned for 4 years in the West End of Hartford, CT into "The Cosmic Bean" coffeehouse and my helper and I were listenijng to Kenny Wayne Shepherd full blast while Natalie was eating outside next door at Reader's Feast Cafe...she came over and said something to the effect: "can you turn your music the fuck down please" I did. What an honor to be chastised by Natalie....
@ZZZZAS She makes herself out to be a humanitarian, and you tell me she's nothing but another Hollywood sellout, stuck up POS. That's a shame, I thought she may be different from the rest..... I was wrong. Lost all respect for Natalie. That's a shame, me and my Beloved Wife will look to a new song.
@ZZZZAS I was there at the "Reader's Feast Cafe" that day and it was not Natalie. She would never say something like that no matter how loud the music was...she has too much class.
This is a beautiful song full of such true emotion. It is a song written about Natalie's grandparents. Although they were married on earth for abt 50+ years, their love for each other will last for eternity. The lyrics are based on a true story. Natalie's grandmother passed--------while gazing out at the sun a few days later, her grandfather (whose point of view the song is written from) said, "I should just turn my face away from the light" abt a day later he died of heartbreak.
Not sure who you are but you are using a picture of my grams (at around 3:50). The picture was taken at my wedding, the last even she able to attend. She passed away in 2009. It is a beautiful tribute. Thank you =).
My father passed away at 48, my mother was 44. Whenever I hear this song I think of her and of her pain. They were best friends and she was never the same. She passed in 2004, twelve years after my father, and I like to believe that they are once again together.
I wonder how many more songs are dedicated to LOST wives or women than to husbands or men? Is it because women are more sensitive to other women or because women tend to DIE more in PEACE TIME?
My elderly father was married to my mother for 47 years and she passed away in 2001. In his grief, he married his childhood sweetheart, who he dated before he met my mother. They never slept together, and she died two years later. He's now 88 and alone. I cannot help but feel his pain when I hear this song.
Another song that makes me weep is Innocence Mission's "I Never Knew You From The Sun." Look it up on YouTube and read the lyrics. If you've ever lost a friend, you will understand. Peace
as a person who had a friend and wife for 20 years . you can stand me against a wall and you will only see only half a man ?. life go s on for grandad but its just not the same .and without . children in our life we are nothing ......
I can't hear this song without crying. It is so powerful and whenever i see an elderly widowed patient I wish they could hear this song as I am sure it would help them
so beautiful.....I had to pause before I could even write this....I have loved this song for years, thank you for posting, it is for anyone who has loved and lost another whom they loved with all their soul.....

I want to thank you for posting this. We live so fast, and it all seems like we wait for the next Big Thing, for Tomorrow, for whatever thing that makes our destiny. And, this video makes me think that the best days, the very best days, are the days we spend being with each other. My parents are older and become frail. As I see this video, I think of them and am moved by how much precious they are. Thank you for giving me this gift of sight.
@jaesaves and i in turn thank you for expressing the same sentiments i feel, this song certainly is sobering and i know that inevitably i will too have to bear the loss of one of my beloved parents...but the thought of either one of them without the other will be the most unbearable of all.....a very beautiful and moving song....
This song makes me remember my Nana and how my Grandpa misses her so...I'm sure wives who have lost their husbands feel the exact same way...half of you is gone. beautiful song and lyrics, but too sad to save as a favorite.
I am truly honest when I say that this video in its simplicity is possibly one of the most beautiful videos I've seen here on YT. The song, the images evoke such a genuine feeling in me.
My first concert was at the Woodlands, Tx. @ a Natalie Merchant show, I was 15 years old. I will be 30 in 13 days. She is to this day my favorite artist. Much love to her. By the way this is my favorite song she sings=)
Wow! That really hit home. My wife passed 4 yrs ago to a ruptured brain aneurysm. We were together for 13 yrs & she was 36 yrs old. Those last lyrics... "would it be wrong if I should just turn my face away from the light go with her tonight? " NM is not advocating suicide. People may not like those lyrics, but she is simply expressing raw emotions of grief. I asked that question many times because I missed my wife so bad. I moved thru the grief process & no longer feel that way, but I did.
@bpvogel - I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. I think you've helped a lot of people by speaking so eloquently of your experience. Words of wisdom. Thank you.
@bpvogel So sorry for your loss. My wife passed on Jan.14 1999 at 48 after 28 yrs of marriage. I never remarried. My two Son's are my world and I'll be a grand dad for the 1st time in Dec. 2010. The grief went away, I still feel cheated out of someone to grow old with. I hope your life will find love and happiness again.
@henerymag I am also sorry about the loss of your wife, and thanks for the kind words. It's strange when you are grieving how a song you hear or something you read provides the inspiration for you to keep putting one foot in front of the other. For me, of all things, it was a Dr. Seuss quote: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."
I try to remember that quote when I feel cheated. I thought I would share it in the hopes that it will also provide some comfort to you.
I'm just beginning the process, in earnest, of trying to put one atom next to another, so shattering was the loss of the very best of me. I had lost words and the wit to arrange them in such order that I myself could understand them. I am grateful to Natalie and her grandfather for saying it all for me. This is exactly how I've felt for the last year and a half. It won't heal, but I am emerging out of my stupefaction, at last. Life is a miracle. I can't believe I still breathe.
@bpvogel wow man, i typed this in because i wanted my girlfriend back. You really have put a downer on that, cause i cant do that now!! But, I love the fact how you say you moved through the grief process, and you no longer feel that way, but you did!! Man, thats real emotion, you re-visit that time and time again! God bless you x
My 90 year old Dad, just lost his wife of 60 years on March 2,,,,,,,,,,my Mom,,,,,,and his beloved wife,,,,,,,,,,Mommy we miss you,,,,,,,,,,,,Our lives will never be the same. Until we meet again,,,,,XXOO
Magnificent foto montage with this wonderfull song of my favorite female singer song writer Natalie Merchand thank you for this song. and thank YOU for the pictures
You were the love For certain of my life You were simply my beloved wife I don't know for certain How I'll live my life Now alone without my beloved wife... My love is gone Would it be wrong if I should Just turn my face away from the light Go with her tonight? This is the first time I've listened to this. It's only gone and made me cry! Great song :(
Thank you so much for posting this vid,,,,,,,,my 83 years old mom has brain cancer,,,,,,my 90 year old dad has cancer in his neck,,,,,,every old couple you show is my mom and dad. your sweet voice will see me though. having your parents to an old age comes with a price,,,,,,,,,,,,one that i am willing to pay.
I am lucky and blessed enough to have found a man that whole heartedly feels this way about me :) truly an emotional and beautiful song, so inspiring :)
i will be using her song for my wife. she has cancer and wont be with me too much longer. but yes, a wonderful song none the less. if you like this type of song, find the ones that sing songs on scrubs and house as well. they tear our hearts out every time.
i am so sorry to hear about your wife. i'm losing my parents,,,,,,,,,,,,,,know its not the same. my heart goes out to you. wish i could say something more,,,,
@imawhack i, feel for you dude, your words are so true, but 2wife" doesn't have to mean ~"wife" i'm sure the song can be related to so many other hurts and pains,
I hope you and your wife have the greatest time together while you can, my man, poetand i didn't know it, chin up fella ;-)
This song always makes me cry- it reminds me of my parents.

We're all old enough to realize now how fast time is going by.
Please, no matter how angry, sad, or aggravated you are, forgive and make it right tonight.
Soon there won't be another chance.

Thank you.

@bpvogel That is great that you have been able to move on. I wish you the best.

I hope your life will find love and happiness again.
henerymag 1 year ago
@henerymag I am also sorry about the loss of your wife, and thanks for the kind words. It's strange when you are grieving how a song you hear or something you read provides the inspiration for you to keep putting one foot in front of the other. For me, of all things, it was a Dr. Seuss quote: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."
I try to remember that quote when I feel cheated. I thought I would share it in the hopes that it will also provide some comfort to you.
bpvogel 1 year ago 2
@bpvogel Thank you. I will remember that quote. Best wishes to you.

Anonnynonny 11 months ago
@bpvogel wow man, i typed this in because i wanted my girlfriend back. You really have put a downer on that, cause i cant do that now!! But, I love the fact how you say you moved through the grief process, and you no longer feel that way, but you did!! Man, thats real emotion, you re-visit that time and time again! God bless you x
