The idea of a "negative afterlife" which punishes you for evil can also act as a deterrent. I think that philisophically, an afterlife can be a deterrent in one respect but it can also be means to pacify people as well. Our current situation is that the world is not run by religious people. The idea of a "negative afterlife" which punishes you for evil can also act as a deterrent. If someone thinks that they can do whatever they want, then just unplug from life like anyone else, what's to stop them from becoming a Hitler? If they don't have a conscience, they've got literally nothing making them afraid to act such ways.

I think that philisophically, an afterlife can be a deterrent in one respect but it can also be means to pacify people as well. Our current situation is that the world is not run by religious people.
