I think the point of view that it can and should be a hybrid approach makes the most sense to me - it ticks practical and innovation boxes. Moodle 2 seems to be trying to do this, but it still comes with a learning curve for instructors and users. Thanks very much @kerryank for the comments. I agree it seems that institutions are now realising that a good middle ground is required between open and closed learning systems. Interestingly enough it seems to be educational policy that slows this process down somewhat. Many people we spoke to were concerned about the privacy of their students vs the ability to use more effective tools, and to bypass often cumbersome LMS'. Hopefully this episode will help get people thinking.
