That was awesome, I mean all those years of service and the fun it gave you. I would try to some how fix it and put her on your wall are something.....joe connick
It would seem that way at first glance but it had several worn out servos that would require digging them out of the wings plus the fuselage and wings had multiple repairs hidden under layers of repair tape. I felt unsafe flying it around anyone other than myself and friend (hiding behind my truck) on this final mission. It would have been smashed and thrown in the trash otherwise. I just had a different way to smash it other than using my feet.
@slickraft What a load of crap! You're under arrest for cruelty to an aircraft!! You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and shall be used against you in a court of law, you have the right to an attorney.... blah blah blah LOL
Did the wing have a solid or tubular carbon fiber rod for reinforcement?
@JaleelJohanson62 Did the wing have a solid or tubular carbon fiber rod for reinforcement?
Neither. It was one of the original Multiplex DG600 kits from 25-30 years ago. It used spring steel wing blades, not tubes. No one was using carbon fiber for hobby stuff in those days.
@slickraft Just after I asked you the question I read down further and saw that you answered it already. I'm now guilty of being one of those annoying people who ask before they read. LOL
It didn't fly too badly on one wing! LOL
One more thing.. killing a current glider in the future with carbon fiber wing reinforcement might prove to be a challenge. I await your next video! LOL
Amazingly I flew it like that all weekend. Multiplex made some incredible kits 20 years ago. This was the original DG600 with the spring steel wing blades, not the re-release that came later with a wing tube. This plane was an antique and part of the reason it got retired. I bet I have an hours worth of video like this thinking it would go at any minute but I really had to push it to the end.
What I got love, is that the speeds you are taking about with this scale ship are approaching the Vne (Never Exceed Speed for those that don't know the term) of my full size sailplane! I love how poignantly the model sailplane community has proved the practical implementation of dynamic soaring; now we just have to manage it with a full size ship, mind you on a much smaller scale (no pun intended) in terms of G.
This video was filmed at Parker Mountain where the legendary R/C pilot Joe Wurts began intruducing DS Soaring to the R/C community years ago. Enjoy your full scale soaring. I'll keep my feet on the ground. Take care.
I've never seen a DG 600 with that much dihedral. It is not meant for pylon style of flying. Induce a failure is very dangerous to those by standers. Simply crash it to a rock.
D'oh!!!! I must have missed the "No Pylon Style Flying" warning message on the box. Silly me. No one was on the hill except me and my friend (filming from behind my truck). Go away.
Yes, the failure was expected from such a high stress flight. It was time to retire the model due to many previous crashes and repairs making it weak.
Well, when I watched this I thought... this guy is really asking for it. Then I read your comments here lol. Good show I've done the same with old airplanes. Sad in a way to see them go down but what is there to do with a old crate really? It's a one shot show, a plane rarely go down more than once but it can be a spectaculare one.
It's not a fast airframe. Scale ships have lots of drag compared to dedicated slope ships. I have clocked it before at 139 MPH but I doubt I was near that fast when the failure occured.
On December 23rd, 1987, a girl named Abby went to bed. However, while she was walking to the bathroom, she saw a skeleton. She was scared and decided to simply go to bed, sleep, and forget about it. However, 6 months, 6 days, and 6 minutes later, the skeleton she saw came up to her and killed her. If you don't post this to 5 other videos in 6 minutes, 6 seconds, and 6 milliseconds, the same thing will happen to you. Trust me, it happened to a friend of mine
The was a very old Multiplex DG600 and one of the most enjoyable scale planes I ever flew. After many years it was time to retire it. The construction was obechi over white bead foam with iron on covering film. It used simple metal wing blades like all old school Multiplex kits from the 70&80s. The wing failed in compression on the top starting at the spoiler bay.
Yes, the "Viking Funeral" I mentioned in the description pretty much tells you I intentionally flew the plane to failure. It was well past its prime and had multiple boom snaps and repairs as well as some very tired servos. It survived a whole weekend of such punishment until about an hour before we had to leave to drive back to Phoenix. Just enough time to recover all the bits including the rugged pilot figure, Captain Kirk. :)
I too held the Viking funeral for several of my old slope gliders. I have no use of these slope gliders anymore. They are now resting in peace on the dark side of DS slopes.
Flew quite well even with one wing.

No shame here. The plane was old and falling apart so it got a Viking Funeral as a send-off.

Reading your comments, it seems you wanted to destroy the aircraft deliberately.
Bit of a waste really considering it's age & looks... you vould have given it away or sold it?
