i love the Design of these 3M Signals!!...they look Futuristic and Visually Attractive!!...there are only Three of these left in my Area...and i tell you these Stand out from an Ordinary Sigal!
From what I've heard the McCain PV signal is a piece of junk compared to the 3M. It was poorly designed, leaks like a sieve and has serious corrosion issues.
Distance limiting isn't stupid, it's done for a few reasons, the largest of which is safety (prevents people from rushing from one stoplight to the next, creating the risk of an accident while doing so).
-some frontage roads bordering a freeway may be too close and the freeway may be going under. Therefore TxDot needs this signal. I've seen this signal at the FM 1960 / Hardy Toll Rd intersection.
There's one intersection in my town that used that same 3M programmed visibility signal on the left turn lane since it was built before they started using arrow indicators. It's interesting how you can only see it from a certain angle.
I wish 3m still made the HVS m-131&231.

In gatineau, quebec in Canada they have these traffic lights at at least 2 intersections.
Those are interesting because the lens on them still have the colourblind friendly shapes, like the yellow lens is a diamond and the red is a square.

that is true i remember driving, in the regular traffic lights during sunset, you could hardly tell what color the light is
